I do not usually write about the teodori, but if someone who is fluent in Japanese can translate the last verse in Song 11 and in Song 7
Kotoshi wa koe okazu.
Koe o okazuni tsukuri tori.
The current translation is:
This year, without fertilizing,
Shall reap a rich harvest without the fertilizer.
But does not okazu and okazuni be translated as accompanied or with?
Why is this important to clarify?
In the Ofudesaki, God calls the Joyous Service the fertilizer.
Truly let the mind be spirited and ponder.
Lean on God and perform the Joyous Service. 4-49
Do not wonder what this talk is about.
It is solely about the matter of the fertilizer. 4-50
This confirms the importance of the Joyous Service in bringing new people to our churches.
It is not surprising that most religions do not listens to the concerns and questions of their congregation. Any questions concerning the authenticity of their beliefs will brand you an heretic. When have you ever heard a religion come out and declare that there was a mistake in their interpretation of their sacred books and correct it. In fact, how many of us have the time and patience to study the authentic sacred books? Many of us depend on the “Higher ups” of the church in explaining the “Words of God”. Many of the authorities in our religions have been indoctrinated that our sacred books are true and derived from God. Any debate on religion, they will bring out their “Interpreted Bibles” in proving their side. To debate with them will be almost useless.
When an individual came out to say that the earth is round and not flat, he was ridiculed and censored. But when the world finally accepted this initially ridiculous proposal, the scientific community was able to discover more information due to this discovery. It is the same I believe with religion. When we are able to translate our sacred books correctly, we will be able to help others, instead of inhibiting them.
In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), Arrogance is one of the evils (sins) that God wants us to remove from our minds. Arrogance is by definition the feeling that one is better than another due to wealth, intelligence, occupation, hierarchy, etc. Like the other evils of greed and self-love, it makes us close minded and unable to understand other views. I believe this is a common occurrence with our church leaders. Their righteousness often becomes their handicap. Their minds become like a distorted mirror. A distorted mirror does not reflect the true image.
Religion should make people better. It should help people to get along, and not divide them. For those who seriously believe this to be true, we must first remove our arrogance, and question our sacred books. Are they the words of God, or are they derived from the mind of man?
I began this website in 2012. People continue to ask me why I want to present a simplified version of our religion; and why do I place emphasis on the Joyous Service? They continue to believe that it is my idea to change the rituals and ceremonies that have been in practice for years in Japan. Where did I get these silly ideas? You will be surprised that they are in our most sacred book, the Ofudesaki (The Tip of the Writing Brush). Please read the Ofudesaki as it is written, and you will find the truth. After reading the Ofudesaki, I will be happy to discuss any of the verses with you.
In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo) a knot is an occurrence that brings upon suffering or misfortune. But there is a common saying that from a knot, a bud will sprout. We believe that sometimes a knot is derived from God. If we ponder over the inconvenience as guidance from God and lean on God, these knots become a building block for our salvation. But if we blame others for these inconveniences, and ignore God’s guidance, we continue on the same path opposing God.
Our religious history has examples of where opposition forces have attempted to destroy and damage our places of worship. The incidence of the removal of the temporary Kanrodai (Pillar of God) in our early history, and the recent damage to the temporary Kanrodai are examples of God’s knots, which he delivers to our religion.
In our religion, the Permanent Pillar represents the original pure mind at the creation of human beings. Our sacred books tell us that when all mankind is purified in mind (without sin), a permanent Kanrodai will be constructed. Heavenly dew will then flow from heaven to the receptacle placed on top of the Kanrodai (Oyasama). When this occurs there will be joy in the world.
What is God telling us with the incidents of the Kanrodai? God’s regret and anger do not arise from the perpetrators of the destruction. God allows these inconveniences to occur. God’s regret is from the dust (greed, arrogance, and self-love) of the followers of our religion. God is telling us that the permanent placement of the Kanrodai is far away. We do not understand. We do not understand what our special prayer (Joyous Service) directed at the Kanrodai does. We do not understand the original pure mind. We must read the Ofudesaki (Tip of the Writing Brush) to understand why God is showing us these knots.
Dear Rev. Fukaya,
I read your editorial in the June issue of Tenrikyo newsletter. I found it interesting that you were talking about the dust of arrogance, which I believe hinders the understanding of God’s truth. Arrogance arises from data or information that may be false, but we believe to be true. From this thinking we believe others to be wrong. It is like a mind that is like a distorted mirror. The reflection we see is not the real image.
Your interpretation and translation of verse 111-132 may not be correct. I believe it is translated as:
Among the trees, there will be some that I guide step by step
and others that I shall let fall as they are (no guidance needed) 3-132
This has nothing to do with God using his timber (missionary) once or more. God is telling us that some of his timber (missionaries) may need more guidance, and some of his missionaries may need no guidance. If you read verse 3-131, God is talking about guidance in the form of illness.
I believe that we should all read the Ofudesaki with a mind that is pure, without arrogance. If we do not, we will be like the distorted mirror. I hope that someday you may allow your followers to express their opinions.
I again ask you if I can write an article in your newsletter, or I will be happy to speak at your monthly service.
In 1838 God descended from Heaven to teach us how to purify our minds so that we can live a joyous life. God gave us the instructions in the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki) on how to spread the truth to the world. The twelve songs also reinforce these steps to gain new members to our churches. God used agriculture terms in conveying his message to the early followers.
- Purchase a field (Church or fellowship))
- Plant the seeds (spread God’s truths/hinokishin)
- Fertilizer (Joyous Service/prayer)
- Weeding (eliminating evil of the prayer)
By following these 4 simple steps, God guarantees a full harvest of crops, or new members to our churches. But throughout the history of this religion, we have not followed these instructions on how to spread God’s truth to the world. Instead, we place importance on tradition and customs; and these instructions become secondary.
Today, the world suffers because the world does not know God’s truth. We must go back to the basic and study the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki).
Four years ago, I began my journey to understand a religion that appeared to be genuine and easy to understand. But to my chagrin, this religion is decreasing in membership year after year. This is a religion I grew up with, where my father and mother were and are reverends of the church. I wanted to understand the core of its teachings, so I began with the most sacred doctrine of the church, which is the Ofudesaki. The Ofudesaki is said to be 17 chapters of verses that were written by God through the foundress, Miki Nakayama
This book (Ofudesaki) explains what the purpose of life is, and why man was created. It gives us the instructions on how we as members of the church can begin to create a joyous life for all mankind. But as I began my translation and interpretation of this book, I found that the previous translation from Japanese to English were inaccurate. I found the interpretations also might be inaccurate due to God’s frequent use of agriculture terminology in teaching people how to increase church membership. I will give examples later on.
To my disappointment, I have been called selfish, arrogant, and stupid by some of my closest relatives. I have been accused of trying to change an established religion of 200 years. But my intent is not to malign this religion, but to spread a religion that would save all mankind. I have asked the main church in America to give me an opportunity to give my views on how to spread the religion to the world, but to my disappointment, they have ignored me. I believe this is the Japanese method of saying, “bleep you”. In the future, I would be happy to share my views at any time or place.
Why am I so motivated to share my views! I see the turmoil and suffering in the world. I see people trying to find purpose in life. I see people trying to be spirited, where it feels good to be alive. The Ofudesaki, which I call the Book of Prophecy, tells us how to get this spirit. We in the church have the responsibility of sharing this religion with the world. I believe truly that the Book of Prophecy tells us how to do it. It is the Joyous Service (prayer) which God calls the Fertilizer (koe) that will save mankind, and not the 12 dances which some say must be performed perfectly in traditional Japanese garments. Even in the songs 7 and 10, although the translations say without fertilizer(koe), I believe the correct translation is, with the fertilizer (Joyous Service), we shall receive a rich harvest (new members)
Please read the Ofudesaki, and tell me if I am wrong. Again I will be happy to give my views at any of your churches.
To the Editor of the Tenrikyo Newsletter
I would like to comment on the February monthly sermon by Rev. Mantaro Yoshikawa. I am confident that the reverend is dedicated to the salvation of all mankind; but I believe by his translation and interpretation of chapter 10 verse 34 , he and the church will continue to hinder God’s efforts for salvation of mankind.
Tsutome sai chigawan yoni nata nara
Ten no atae mo chigau koto nashi 10-34
Verse 34 can be translated as:
If there is no failure in the service, (when all mankind is purified)
the gift of Heaven will also be given without failure. 10-34
The previous verses (10-32, 10-33) are about God teaching the hand service (Joyous Service), and taking the missionaries to all corners of the earth, and then the Kanrodai will be completed. Verse 34 is talking about when all mankind is already purified. It has nothing to do with performing the service without error.
To translate verse 34 as requiring all members to perform the ceremonies as performed in 19-century Japan, is totally ludicrous. This is like God asking us for a sacrifice. Our God is not a God that wants us to praise and fear him. God is loving, and only wants to save all mankind from suffering. This is why he has given us the Joyous Service, which is a prayer that can be easily performed by anyone, even a mute as mentioned in one of the verses.
As we see the suffering and the cruelty in the world, why are we making it difficult for people to understand and become missionaries in our religion? We need to spread our prayer that will save all mankind. Let us make it easier for people to pray. God has given us this prayer. When all mankind is purified, then the following will apply:
If there is no failure in the service, (when all mankind is finally purified)
the gift of Heaven will also be given without failure. 10-34
And all mankind will live a joyous life with everyone helping each other
If we were to take the words of the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki) literally, one would think that God was giving the early followers of the religion the recipe to successful harvesting of crops. In 1838 God descended from Heaven and promised the villagers an abundance of crops. The following is the recipe that most farmers would be familiar with:
Planting seeds + water + weeding + fertilizer = crops
But God was not talking about crops. God was talking about how to spread God’s truth to the world. Crops refer to the number of people coming to our churches. God has given us a special prayer, which he refers to as the fertilizer. This prayer is called the Joyous Service.
First we must build a church, to spread God’s truth. This is like planting seeds for a harvest. Some will build large churches hoping to harvest a large crop, while others may build a fellowship to harvest a small crop. For this prayer (fertilizer) to be effective we must have a pure mind. This pure mind without arrogance, greed, and self-love is referred to as water in our sacred book. But many of our minds are contaminated with evil (greed, arrogance, and self love). God refers to this as muddy water. The removal of the dirt (evil) to make the water clear is necessary before our prayers become effective. This requires the weeding of our minds of greed, arrogance, and self-love. When all four of these ingredients are present, our prayers are receptive to God. God will then bring new members to our churches. This becomes the recipe for spreading God’s truth to the world.
Building a church + pure mind + removal of evil + Prayer = new members
It is said that God uses analogies and parables in teaching mankind. In the year 1838, God was said to have descended from Heaven upon a small farming town in Japan, to save mankind. In teaching the early followers, God used words that were familiar with the agrarian community. The following is from the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki) on why God descended from Heaven.
First to help those who grow crops,
I desired to teach you on the matter of the fertilizer.
Do not wonder why the fertilizer is effective.
If only God accepts your mind. 13-61
If one were to take these verses literally, one would believe that God was talking about agriculture, and how to increase the production of crops. But God is talking about how to increase church members. Crops refer to new members. Weeding refers to purifying the mind of evil (greed, arrogance, and self love). The fertilizer refers to a special prayer (Joyous Service) that God has given us to save all mankind. God is telling us that by performing and spreading the Joyous Service with a pure mind, it will bring forth new members to our churches.
Prayer (Joyous Service) + Pure mind = New Members
Why is the weeding of our minds so important for our prayers to be successful? Without a pure mind, how do we teach and help others when God brings them to our churches? This is why without a pure mind our special prayer is not receptive to God. This is why church membership does not increase. We must weed and use the correct fertilizer to harvest a large crop. Now we know why church membership does not increase. This information is all in the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki).
I would like to go over with the word hinokishin, and offer another interpretation. Hinokishin has been defined as work done out of giving, and helping others, without any expectation of gratitude. But consider the word hinoki, what is defined as a quality timber, and shin which is defined as the mind’s purity of the “Origin”. Timber or yoboku is a missionary; so hinokishin is a missionary that has the purity of mind. Hinokishin then may be the act of spreading God’s truth with the purity of mind. This is a mind that will certainly be accepted by God, and bring upon new followers to our churches.
In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), God tells us that he will begin to work in saving all mankind. Even the date of January 26, 1887 is given as the special day. God promises that he will do “Marvelous workings” to save mankind. Many of us would think that marvelous would mean benefits like financial or worldly gains; but in the Book of Prophecy, it appears that marvelous refers to God placing illness on our bodies. How could illness be marvelous and benefit us?
It is said that God will begin to begin the process of helping mankind live a joyous life. Illness becomes God’s tool in informing us that we are using our minds contrary to God’s intentions. God uses illness to help us remove these evils from our minds. But how does he place illness on us? God gives us a glimpse of our future lives by entering us and comparing our minds with the pure mind (Oyasama) at the creation of mankind. When evil is present, God places illness on our bodies. Illness becomes God’s guidance. These illnesses that God places, requires a special prayer (Joyous Service). But why does God require a prayer in initiating his miraculous workings (placing illness)?
In the Book of Prophecy, God states that he has given us a special prayer, and opened the portal to save all mankind. This should mean that our religion should be increasing in membership. But our church membership does not increase. Who of us has the true sincerity to pray (Joyous Service) that God will place illness on others; and who of us have the courage and faith to heal and teach them when God places them in front of us. What is the use of God placing illness on people if there is no one to heal them and tell them God’s teachings? This is why our prayer (Joyous service) must be sincere for God to accept it. We must know what we are praying for, and have the faith and strength to heal and inform others when God answers our prayers. When this happens, God’s promise will be realized. A prayer for God’s marvelous workings (verse 17-74).
In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), it is stated that since the creation of mankind, God had been a spectator. There is a date in history that God began to help mankind. This important date is January 26, 1887. This is the day that Oyasama, the parent of all mankind passed away. What makes her physical absence so important in God’s plan to help mankind?
Oyasama, the soul of the first parent of mankind was said to have a lifespan of 115 years guaranteed by God. She communicated through God the teaching of the Heaven’s Truth Religion (Tenrikyo). But unexpectedly to her followers, she becomes ill. Through a mediator, God is asked what needs to be done to save Oyasama. God asks, “ Should I open the portal to level the ground or close the portal to level the ground?” The followers reply to open the portal to level the ground hoping that God will save Oyasama. On January 26, 1887, as the prayer service ends, she passes away. Her followers are at loss to what to do. A mediator is again utilized to ask why Oyasama passed away. God replies that he had done what the followers had requested. He had opened the portal to level the ground.
Let us attempt to find out what the opening of the portal means. First what is the portal? There are verses in the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki) that alludes that the Kanrodai (Pillar) may be the portal. What does the Pillar do? In the Book of Prophecy, it is said that the Pillar will distinguish between evil and good minds.
Among the high mountains, the preparation to distinguish between those
of nihon (good) and those of kara (evil) will be made also by the Pillar. 2-46
But what is this Pillar that distinguishes our minds? In the Heaven’s Truth Church, the Pillar is said to be a stand representing the location where God created mankind, specifically the exact location where human beings were created. In our religion, we believe that Oyasama was the first parent of mankind at this location. Her mind is said to be pure. The above verse states that God will utilize the Stand in comparing our minds to Oyasama’s pure mind. Again, God emphasizes that this process of purification of the mind has not occurred yet, but prophesizes that it will soon occur in the future.
In the Book of Prophecy, it is also said that Oyasama and the Kanrodai are the same. They represent the purity of the mind at the creation of mankind.
What are you thinking concerning the stand?
This is because the Parent of Nihon (Oyasama) exists 10-22*
While physically present, Oyasama was said to be the shrine of God, where people directed their prayers to receive God’s blessings. In the Book of Prophecy, God continues to request the followers to perform the special prayer (Joyous Service) with a mind of true sincerity (without greed, arrogance, and self love). But the early followers were indecisive to perform the prayer due to their concerns about the safety of Oyasama. Authorities had continued to imprison her in her latter years for the performance of the prayer service for the salvation of mankind. Many in the Tenrikyo Church believe that God shortened her life by 25 years, so that her followers could perform the prayer without worrying about the authorities taking Oyasama to prison. But can we not also speculate that her soul now has returned to the location of the Kanrodai, where now God can compare the minds of the world with Oyasama’s pure original mind. The prediction of verse 2-46 now becomes real. The Portal or the Kanrodai is now opened as requested by the early followers. Our sincere prayer toward the Pillar now becomes effective. God begins to purify the minds of the world.
With our sincere prayer toward the Pillar, God begins to bring people to us by distinguishing their minds with Oyasama’s pure mind. If evil is present, God then enters them, and places illness on their bodies.
Kara (evil) and Nihon (good) in distinguishing them,
fire and water (illness) will be put in to distinguish them. 2-47
In the mountain, I can see fire and water ( illness )
Can’t anyone see this with your own eyes? 2-40
I see sick people coming one after another.
Can’t anyone see this with your own eyes? 4-10
With our sincere prayer, God brings people to us, so we can teach them about causality, or how our minds reflect what happen to us. We heal their illness and teach them our special prayer (Joyous Service) toward the Pillar. This continues until the whole world becomes spirited.
On this important date of January 26, 1887, Oyasama returns to the original location of the creation of mankind fulfilling God’s prophecy, initiating the salvation of all mankind. God had opened the portal to level the ground.
*It is also interesting to note the similarities of the confiscation of the Stand by the authorities, and the imprisonment of Oyasama by the authorities, both situations causing God’s anger.
What if we advertised and spread only the meat of the teaching? Spread the truth of causality; spread the prevention of the dusts, and most important, spread the Joyous Service.
What if we advertised on the billboards of the world, on radio and television stations, and in newspapers? What if we directed our limited financial resources on advertisements? In Chapter 14, God encourages us to inform others of our special prayer.
What if we perform the Joyous Service with sincerity (without greed and arrogance) in a language we could understand? Would God then give us the blessings that are promised in the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki)? Would more people begin to understand causality?
In the Book of Prophecy, God continues to warn us that we do not understand? Even the children of the chosen one (Oyasama) did not understand. They did not understand the significance and the power of the Joyous Service in settling the earth.
Unfortunately in religion, ceremonies and tradition usually supersede the purification of the mind. We are not too different from the cultures that sacrificed animals to appease their Gods. We believe that God needs to be praised and offered our sacrifices (ceremonies) before his blessings are granted. But does God need our praise?
The Joyous Service differs from any prayer on earth. It asks God to help others understand causality, and helps them understand why we suffer or have joy. It brings people to us so we can help them purify their minds of greed and arrogance. It is a prayer asking God to help others. It is a self-perpetuating prayer that supposes to bring understanding to the world. Like a fertilizer, which brings upon an abundance of crop, this prayer brings people to us, so we can teach them God’s truth. It is a prayer that we need to spread to the world.
What if we begin to concentrate on our special prayer?
At the end, it is faith that the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki) is God’s truth. We must pray (Joyous Service), without greed, arrogance, and self love. When God answers our prayers and brings people to our churches, we must teach them about causality and reincarnation. We must heal their illness if they have any, and teach them about our special prayer. We must spread this prayer that will eventually save the whole world. This is the special path God promise that will bring peace to the world. Who is ready to give it a try?
In many religions, there is a special site that people pilgrimage to. In the Heaven’s Truth Religion, there is also have a special site that is said to possess miraculous properties. The stand, pillar, Ojiba and the Kanrodai are names used to represents this location where the first human beings were created. In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), the pillar also is said to be the original parent of mankind (Oyasama). Oyasama is said to be the first parent of mankind, who God had prophesized to be reincarnated in the 19th century to save the world.
What are you thinking concerning the stand?
This is because the Parent of Origin (Oyasama) exists. 10-22
Some scholars also believe that the stand represents the purified mind of the original Parent (Oyasama) that was void of greed, arrogance, and self-love.
It is written that some of the early followers of the religion after purifying their minds were immobilized when they walked over the site where mankind was created. The following concerning this event is written in the Book of Prophecy:
Hereafter, bodily disorders will appear here and there.
Know that it is the care being given by God. 8-81
When you come, compare your disorder among yourselves
If the conditions are the same, quickly begin the sweeping to purify the mind. 8-82
Walk over where you have swept (with a purified mind) , and you will come to a standstill.
That place, the Kanrodai (location where mankind was created)
But besides indicating the site of the creation of mankind, the stand or location appears to be the place where God discerns our mind. God compares our minds with the original pure mind of the origin or the Parent (Oyasama).
Among the high mountains, the preparation to distinguish between those
of good (nihon) and those of evil (kara) will be made also by the Pillar. 2-46.
Oyasama and the pillar (some will say is the same), is what God uses to distinguish our minds when we pray for the salvation of others. This is why the early followers prayed toward the pillar, or the location of the first parent. With the acceptance of their sincere prayer, God used the pillar (Oyasama) in distinguishing the minds of the local residents; and from these findings, guides them to salvation.
But on January 26 1887, Oyasama passes away as prophesized in the Book of Prophecy
On the eleventh, the nine will have disappeared, the origin (Kanrodai) forgotten.
I await the 26th of the first month. 3-73
On this day, the mind of Oyasama was freed from her physical body, and her mind becomes a mobile pillar that has its root on the original pillar. God now has the ability to distinguish the minds of the whole world. This prayer now becomes a prayer for world salvation.
In many religions, there is a sacred site that followers make pilgrimages to every year. The pillar or the Kanrodai is a major component of the Heaven Truth religion. What is it or what does it represent? From a religious background, it is said to represent the location where the first human beings were created. From the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), it represents the original parent that created mankind. We call this person Oyasama.
What do you think of this Stand?
It is the Parent of Nihon 10-22
The pillar is said to be able to distinguish how we are using our minds. It is said to distinguish between good and evil.
Among the high mountains, the distinction between those
of good and those of evil will be made also by the Pillar. 2-46
I believe that God uses this location to compare our minds with the purity of the original mind of the parent (Oyasama). During Oyasama’s presence on this earth, the pillar and Oyasama both represented God’s origin of mankind. People came to this location and Oyasama to be saved. This is why to the Tenrikyo people, making a pilgrimage to Ojiba in Japan is one of the most important actions in receiving salvation.
But in January 26, 1887, the world changed forever. Oyasama passed away. What does this mean? The following is from the Osashizu:
All that I have said until now was put into a container of truth. But now God has opened the portals and stepped out.
Oyasama now becomes the moving pillar, helping God distinguish good from evil throughout the world. The pilgrimage to Ojiba Japan becomes secondary, because Oyasama helps us distinguish good and evil throughout the world. The world becomes one step closer in realizing the Joyous life.
The 26th is an important date in our religion, because the portal was opened to save all mankind. What does this mean?
Open the portal means to have the Joyous Service become effective, making it possible to bring more people into the religion. Oyasama makes this happen. In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki) is the following:
What do you think of this Stand?
It is the Parent of Nihon 10-22
Among the high mountains, the distinction between those
of nihon and those of kara will be made also by the Pillar. 2-46
Oyasama (pillar) helps distinguish our minds, so that God can give us his free and unlimited blessings in the form of illness. This process makes people realize the law of causality and the relationship of the mind and the body. Before the 26th, the prayer (Joyous Service) was not effective in bringing in followers to save. This is why after the passing away of Oyasama, there was an enormous growth of the church. Oyasama is helping God distinguish our minds by our sincere prayer.
But it is said that weeds have grown and obscured this path. Our prayer (Joyous Service) is not effective because we have greed, arrogance, and self love in our minds. The religion is stagnant in growth. Many in the church also place more emphasis on the Yorozuyo and the 12 songs, then the prayer for world salvation (Joyous Service). We place more emphasis on ceremony than our special prayer (Joyous Service) to save the world. Oyasama and God await our sincere prayer, so that the whole world can understand the truth of God. When this happen, the world will see joy and prosperity for all.
It is interesting that God revealed himself in a rural community using terms like crops (ryukei, ryuke), weeding, and fertilizing. These terms are familiar to the agricultural community. But suppose these words have different meanings that God wants to convey.
In agriculture, the process of weeding, and fertilizing is said to bring upon an abundant harvest of crops. In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki) are the following:
The mind that causes depressed crops is pitiful.
Quickly become spirited so that the crops are not depressed. 1-13
Is God really talking about farming? Today, it would be difficult to believe that by being spirited (removing greed, arrogance, and self love), it would bring upon an abundance of crops. But maybe the farmers at that time believed that this was God’s promise to them. Suppose these words have a different meaning. Suppose the term crops (Ryuke) represent people that understand the teaching or new members, the term weeding represents being spirited or having true sincerity, and the fertilizer is the Joyous Service. The following again is from the Book of Prophecy.
Truly let the mind be spirited and ponder.
Lean on God and perform the joyous service. 4-49
Do not wonder what this talk is about.
It is solely about the matter of the fertilizer. 4-50
This fertilizer, do not wonder what makes it effective.
True sincerity of the mind is what makes it effective. 4-51
Then if we perform the Joyous Service (fertilizer) while weeding our minds of greed, arrogance, and self-love, we can receive God’s blessing of new church members.
If you wish that the crops grow spiritedly,
perform the Kagura Service and the Teodori. 1-14
God made it easier for the early farmers to understand God’s teaching by comparing the abundance of crops, to the process of harvesting people that understand God’s truth of causality and the Joyous Life. It is with this importance of saving people that we must spread the fertilizer (Joyous Service) to the world, while weeding ourselves of greed and arrogance.
Some of you may wonder why I have translated the Ofudesaki as the Book of Prophecy instead of the Tip of the Writing Brush. First of all saki is translated as future, and fude is the writing brush; it is the writing brush that tells the future. All through the sacred book, there is a message of what God is going to do in the future. Please find out what God plans to do.
In the Tip of the Writing Brush, the emphasis of the Joyous Service is emphasized by God. The Joyous Service brings upon God’s workings of miraculous signs. What are these miraculous signs? God will reveal the minds of the world, and reflect it on our bodies. The truth of causality will be revealed. The following are verses that support this hypothesis.
Step by step, the performers of the service will assemble.
Taking this as a sign (Joyous Service), I shall begin my workings. 4-14
All in the Fall, the sign (God’ workings) will begin to be seen.
Hurry and begin the Joyous Service. 6-13
This talk, if the sign (Joyous Service) brings upon its effect (God’s workings)
know that everything proceeds in this way. 17-74
The following is a blog, that may persuade church members that the Joyous Service (not the yorozuyo and 12 dances) is the prayer that God wants us to spread to the world. With this prayer, God will send people to us so we can heal them (osazuke), and teach them. We must pray (joyous Service) with sincerity for God to spread the truth. It is this prayer, and not the osazuke we must concentrate on. The Joyous Service is what makes the Osazuke effective?
It is said in the Tip of the Writing Brush that God created human beings to live a joyous life. This was a herculean task on the part of God. It is said that since the creation, God has been on the sidelines looking at the joy created by mankind, but also looking at the sufferings that are created by mankind.
The religious sacred books have not alleviated the hatred, greed, and arrogance in the hearts of mankind. Today we see religions killing in the name of God. At home, we see our young people hooked on drugs and alcohol. We see arrogance in world leaders, including our own President. There is no true joy that was envisioned by God.
It is obvious that we as humans cannot bring upon joy by ourselves. We must ask God to help us. In the Tip of the Writing Brush, it is said that God will begin to work again. Remember that God has been on the sidelines since his creation of human beings. God has given us a special prayer (Joyous Service) asking God to help others attain the joyous life.
When we pray without greed and arrogance, this special prayer is said to reach God. God will then begin to work as he did when he created the world. When God begins to work, all mankind will eventually live a joyous life, with everyone helping each other.
The Heaven’s Truth Religion spread like wild fire in the late nineteen century in Japan. But since that time the religion has stagnated. What has happened?
The religion has its origin in a rural farming community of Japan. In the Tip of the Writing Brush are many references to farming expressions to help the early followers understand the teaching of the church. The early followers understood these expressions. The terms planting seeds, weeding, fertilizing and harvesting were terms used. In agriculture, to gain a rich harvest, the farmer must weed and fertilize. It is the same in increasing church members. I will explain.
When we want to share our joy with others, we want to tell others. This is planting the seeds. This requires a place like a church where the teachings are explained. The fertilizer is our special prayer (Joyous service) asking God to help introduce the teachings to others. This is why God tells us to quickly perform the Joyous Service so we can teach others about God’s truths. But for the prayer to be effective, we must weed our minds of greed, arrogance, and self love. Our minds must be sincere for our prayers to be answered by God.
In summary two distinct processes must occur before we can increase the number of followers.
- We must perform, and spread the Joyous Service to the world. This is called fertilizing.
- Those who perform the Joyous Service must have a pure mind before God accepts our sincere prayer. We must weed our minds of evil.
Why are we not seeing an increase in church membership? Could we be using the wrong fertilizer? Many in the church believe the Yorozuyo, and the 12 songs are part of the fertilizer. Could only the joyous service and Kagura Service be the fertilizer? And finally, are we praying with a pure mind, without greed, arrogance, and self love?
I am sad to hear about the passing of our former Shinbashira. I was fortunately able to meet him and his wife when they visited California long time ago. I am sure, there are people within and without our religion that are wondering why our leader and his wife succumb to sufferings. The following is from the Osahizu in reference to the ill health of the Honseki:
Sah, sah, sah, until now his body has been disabled for a long time. Disabled, disabled each day. Almost half a year has passed disabled. In spite of his disability he has served Me daily. I have been meaning to give all of you My teachings, but have been unable to do so. I was unable, I was unable because of many and various problems. Heretofore, there have been times he could have recovered, but there were minds of dissatisfaction among you that obstructed his recovery.
What is God trying to tell us? Is there dissatisfaction on the progress of the path? Why does God tell us in the Tip of the Writing Brush that we do not understand? Could it be about the Service?
Throughout history, we have had many conflicts, wars among countries, religious schisms, gang rivalries, and individual retributions. How do we end these conflicts? In the Tip of the Writing Brush (Ofudesaki) is the following:
God sincerely desires only to end the wars
among those on the high mountains. 13-50
By what means can they be ended?
If only you set forth on the Joyous Service. 13-51
The Joyous Service is a prayer asking God to help people realize the truth of causality. When people accept the truth of causality, it would be difficult to treat others so poorly. The proverb by Luke “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” would become a common occurrence.
But for this prayer to reach heaven, we must purify our hearts, and eliminate greed, arrogance, and self-love from our own minds. When God accepts our prayers, and brings people to us, we have the opportunity to teach them the truth of causality. With this process, this prayer will eventually resonate throughout the world, and the world will be joyous.
For those in our religion, that are adamant on requiring the world to perform the prayer as exactly performed in 19-century Japan, there is a quote referring to the danger from within the religion.
Those who oppose Me are also children dear to My heart. Yet dearer are those who pray to Me. But even with those who pray to Me, if they do not follow My will, they are the same as those who oppose Me. (April 21, 1896 Osashizu)
Are we following God’s will?
Why Does not church membership increase?
First we must weed. For those who are followers now, we must eliminate evil (8 dusts) from our minds daily. This is why it was important for the early members, including Oyasama’s family to sweep their dusts away before God could act.
Second, we must pray with our special service (Joyous Service). The service is referred to as the fertilizer in the Tip of the Writing Brush (Ofudesaki). I believe that this prayer is only the Joyous Service, and not the Yorozuyo and 12 songs that follow. The Joyous Service directly asks God to help others eliminate evil from their minds. The following is part of a blog on why church membership does not increase.
In the Heaven’s Truth Religion (Tenrikyo), the terms fertilize, and weeding are terms used when talking about increasing membership to a religion. These terms were familiar to the agricultural society where our religion was founded. As we know, fertilizer and weeding increases the harvest of a crop. The farmer must work hard in obtaining a good crop. This requires water in addition to weeding and fertilizer. This hard work is also required in obtaining church member. We must work diligently. We must weed and fertilize in order to bring people into the church. I will explain.
The term fertilizer is sometimes used in reference to our special prayer. This prayer is called the Joyous Service. We ask God to help eliminate evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from the minds of others with this prayer. God brings people into our lives with this prayer, thus indirectly increasing church membership. But the fertilizer (Joyous Service) does not work automatically. For the prayer to be effective, our minds must be pure of evil. That is why we must continually eliminate greed and arrogance from our mind. This is the weeding of our minds. We must have true sincerity before God accepts our special prayer.
For those churches that are having a difficult time increasing membership, weeding and fertilizing may be in order. Sweep evil from your hearts first, and then pray that God helps others to eliminate greed and arrogance. Weed and fertilize and a rich harvest will become eminent.
What is the best way to keep the truth in a closet? Suppose someone told you that to get God’s blessings that you have to perform a dance, singing it in a foreign language, and performing it in a ceremonial dress, lasting for about two hours. Suppose some one also told you that you had to perform this dance perfectly, without one mistake for God to provide the blessings?
How many of us will be able to accomplish this goal? I would imagine not many. But in the Tip of the Writing Brush (Ofudesaki), God guarantees us that when all mankind is purified from the innermost heart, God’s blessings will be provided to all mankind. Because this original causality exists, it is guaranteed that all mankind will be saved.
If the chances of even one person performing the sacred dance perfectly are remote, how would the world be saved? Are the proponents of performing the service without error wrong? I believe the answer is in the Tip of the Writing Brush.
The truth (ri) of heaven is causality. We must understand causality before we can understand God’s teaching. The Osashizu has a plethora of verses that allude to this truth. Our religion is Tenrikyo, translated as Heaven’s Truth Church. Heaven’s truth is causality.
Dandan to Tsutome oshieru kono moyo
Mune no uchi yori mina soji suru 9-95
In preparing to teach you the Service step by step,
I shall clean everyone’s innermost heart. Traditional translation
Little by little, I will teach the Service (Joyous Service). By this preparation,
I will sweep clean everyone’s innermost heart. More accurate translation
The traditional translation states that God will purify our minds before he teaches us the service. The more accurate translation states that the by the service (joyous service), God will help us sweep away our evils (greed, arrogance, self love, etc…)
Many people wonder why the promised time has not come. Why are our prayers not answered? In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following:
Step by step, I have taught the truth of single-heartedness with God. But you still do not understand. 2-12
Though I desire to go forth quickly, there is no path. I cannot go forth. 2-13
This path I wish to open quickly, but there are no places that teach it. 2-14
This path if you truly desire it to occur, ponder over everything from your innermost heart. 2-15
What do you think this talk is about? I am hastening for the places where God’s truth is conveyed.
The question arises, what is God’s truth? As churches, are we teaching God’s truth, or are we teaching what we think are God’s truth (human truth)? The promised times have not come, are we teaching God’s truths?
note: in my opinion the path refers to the Service, or joyous service that we ask God to help sweep away our evils. But many in the church emphasize the twelve songs, and the rituals of our church. This is why our prayers become limited. We must spread the truth of our joyous service for our churches to be effective.
What makes going through the path of causality so difficult, and at the same time so special. There are two paths in the world, the world’s path, and the path of causality. In the world’s path, one is at lost when sufferings or difficulties arise. In the path of causality, one understands why suffering and joy occur. But understanding causality by itself may not get you through the path. What does this mean?
The world is a reflection of our minds. Causality operates in a manner to purify our minds. Events occur that may go against our wishes. Understanding causality may help us understand these occurrences. Yet sometime despite our understanding of causality, we become angry, or worry about these events. We tend to revert to our old thoughts and actions. We continue to plants bad seeds that will bring upon more suffering. We must not only understand causality, we must resolve to remove the existing evils (greed, arrogance, and self love) in our minds when confronted with sufferings. Causality becomes a self-cleansing process of the mind.
In the world, there are sunny days, and cloudy days. Every type of day is manifested by our minds. With each manifested day, if we go through with a purity of mind, then every day will eventually become a sunny day.

What is the difference between Tenrikyo (Heaven’s Truth Chruch) and other religions? I believe that many Tenrikyo followers believe that our church is a unique religion, different from all other religions. But realistically our religion is not much different than many of the other major religions (Buddhism, Shinto, and Hinduism). The common theme is causality (innen and karma). The law of causality states that good thoughts and behavior results in a joyous future; and evil thoughts and behavior results in suffering. Causality is an important concept to understand in the salvation of mankind. In the Tip of the Writing Brush it is often inferred as the “truth of heaven.” Tenrikyo by its name reinforces the concept of causality. Ten is translated as heaven and ri as the truth. The truth is the existence of causality.
But for those who truly believe that our church is unique, there is good news. Our church believes that God will begin to help (guide) people see this relationship between cause and effect. In essence, God will begin to hasten the relationship between cause and effect. One will be able to see his or her future immediately. That illness or bodily discomfort may be God’s guidance in changing your mind or behavior. When one changes one’s behavior, one plants a seed for joy in the future (causality).
Our religion is unique in that we believe that God is working now to help us see that Causality does exist. But our prayer is also unique, in that we are asking God to help other people understand causality in order for them to sweep evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from their minds. When this happen, one plants good seeds for the future. We are praying for the salvation of the world. In summary, we must spread the truth of our church. We must tell people about causality. We must pray!
The following explains why we must pray and spread our prayer to the world. Again this is the joyous service, and not the twelve songs.
The following verses have always confused me.
From now on, step-by-step, I shall teach the hand movements of the beginning of the world service, which was unknown.4-90
Even until now, this is this world’s beginning, I have told you; yet no one knows what I mean. 7-35
This Service, this is this world’s beginning. if only this is realized.15-29
The joyous service request God to enter us, and help the world sweep our evils away to live a joyous life. It was the same at the beginning of mankind. God entered the instruments of creation to begin the joyous life. This is why the service is the world’s beginning (verse 15-29). Even the middle part of the joyous service reminds us about the beginning of the world where God works to begin the joyous life.
Sometimes I wonder why there are not so many people that view my website, and become interested in our church. I attempt to write interesting blogs to attract potential yobokus that may help propagate our teachings; yet progress appears to be very slow. In the Osashizu, there is a quote concerning a coming anniversary. It states that the promised time has not yet appeared despite the dedication of the followers. Why has not the promised time come?
Many times we think that we can help people see the truth of our religion. We believe the truth will set them free. But people have a difficulty in understanding the truth. We need God’s help. In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following:
Since the path now is covered with dust, take up God, and do the sweeping. 3-145
There after, the path will be wide and without dust. Take along with you as many others as you wish. 3-146
We need God’s help in bringing in people to our religion. Also the following from the Tip of the Writing Brush:
This Service, from where do you think they will come from?
From the high places they will come spiritedly. 2-4
This service will bring people to our religion. But what is this service that God is talking about? I believe that the service is the Joyous Service. This is the simple service asking God to sweep away the evils (dusts).
But unfortunately in our religion, more emphasis is placed on the service that follows the joyous service (the Yorozuyo and the twelve songs). I believe that this is why our religion has not spread like God has promised in our sacred book. It is God who will bring people to our religion. We need to perform the Joyous Service daily!
Why is church membership shrinking?
I sometimes wonder why our religion does not spread rapidly as God has promised in the Tip of the Writing Brush. Recently I found a verse in the Osashizu, which I found interesting. It stated that God helps weed and fertilize, making the harvesting of timber (spirited members) easier. But before God can help us, we need to plant the seeds. What does this mean?
In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following verse:
This Service (prayer), where do you think they will come from
From the high places they will come spiritedly 2-4
I believe it is saying that God brings people to us by our sincere prayer. This is planting the seeds. God then helps them sweep evil (arrogance, greed, and self love) from their minds as requested by our special prayer (joyous service). This is the process of weeding by understanding causality (Innen).
After the weeding where the mind is pure, God’s teachings are given, especially the teaching that mankind was created to live the joyous life. This is called fertilizing the mind. When the individual understands this “Origin”, he or she becomes spirited and happy (salvation).
In summary, our prayer is the impetus that begins the path to a joyous life. We need to plant the seeds before God can help us. This is why prayer is so important for the salvation of the world. But what is the prayer that will save the world? In the Tip of the Writing Brush, the Joyous Service is the prayer that will save the world. But what is the prayer that is emphasized by the central church? It is the Yorozuyo and the twelve songs. From an outside perspective, the twelve songs are not even a prayer. It is like a motivation song for the early followers.
Recently I heard that the Mormon Church as increased its membership to 15 million people in the world. This is a three-fold increase. But the Tenrikyo Church to my recollection has always been around 2 to 3 million people. Why has not our church grown in members? In the Osashizu it is stated that we tend to make up our own truths, and ignore God’s truths. This may be what is happening to our religion. We need to spread our simple prayer (joyous service) to the world. We need to plant the seeds that will save the world!
* not the views of the Tenrikyo Church
In the Osashizu is written:
Everything has a truth. December 25, 1897
I believe that the truth is the truth of causality as inferred in the Osashizu many times. Inserting Causality for truth, the previous verse becomes:
Everything has a causality. Osashizu December 25, 1897
This is why we must teach the world about causality for the world to understand God’s teachings.
In the Osashizu, it is stated that the narrow path is difficult to follow, but there are less injuries. A Broad path (path of the world) is easy to follow but there are more injuries.
The narrow path is a path that is aware of causality. It is a difficult path because it requires patience and resolve in going through the consequences of causality. But because one is aware of the cause of causality, one is able to confront causality with reflection and true sincerity. One begins to remove greed and arrogance bringing forth less sufferings (injuries) in the future. This path guarantees joy in the future.
The worldly path is not aware of causality. It is an easy path because it does not require patience and resolve in dealing with the consequences of causality. When sufferings or inconveniences occur, one is at loss. In coping with the consequences of causality, one easily lets greed and arrogance take over the mind. This will bring forth more sufferings (injuries) in the future. This is the path of the world now. When the narrow path becomes the path of the world, the world will experience everlasting joy.
The following is from the Osashizu on the importance of understanding causality.
Sah, shah. This crying at night: you say it is the child crying. I have already instructed you in every situation. Listen carefully. Anything whatsoever is the persuasion of God. In the Fudesaki, as well, I have already informed you of everything. You read it but do not understand. Why is it that the baby cries at night, cries at night? What is God persuading you to do? The rain may fall, the wind may blow, spring days may be balmy. In a single year, there are all kinds of day. You wonder why the baby cries. If you only think of the present moment, how unlikely that you will see! How unlikely that you will understand! Listen and understand well.
The following verse confirms the importance of causality in understanding the path to salvation. The following from the Tip of the Writing Brush:
What ever may be said about things already seen,
unless the origin is known, there can be no understanding. 4-81
The path to salvation requires the individual to understand the law of causality. When this is understood, the individual can comprehend the original cause of the world. Mankind was created by God to live the joyous life.
Even until now, I have told you that now is the beginning of this world, yet no one knows what I mean. 7-35
This Service, this is the beginning of the World. If only this is realized. 15-29
Ponder over this Service, whoever you may are. If you dare to stop it, you will be stopped. 15-53
It is the same as the way I began this world. I began human beings that never existed. 15-54
A summary of the verses
Origin to joyous life
Service to joyous life
Service and Origin serve the same purpose to attain a joyous life.
In the Origin, God created mankind to live a joyous life. As to the service, God created the service (joyous service) as a means of mankind attaining the joyous life. The service and the origin have the same purpose of having mankind live the joyous life.
Verse 7-35 refers to the Service as a means of attaining the joyous life, continuing God’s original purpose in creating mankind.
The Kagura service at Jiba, besides serving as a prayer to attain the joyous life, it also recreates the origin of mankind.
Verse 15-54 and 15-55, confirms the service that was created by God to establish the joyous life.

a. God created mankind to live a joyous life.
b. The Joyous service
8 People become spirited (true sincerity).
a. Accept the consequences of cause and effect (tanno).
b. Help others
9 People begin the initial process of praying.
a. Joyous Service
The present path is covered with dust. Take up a broom and begin the sweeping. 3-144
The path thereafter will be broad and clear. Take along with you as many others as you wish. 3-145
My interpretation. There is too much evil (greed, arrogance, self love) in the world today. Take up a broom refers to praying to God (joyous service), and asking God to help sweep the evils from the minds of the world.
When our sincere prayers are accepted by God, God brings people to us to be saved. I believe this addresses how we bring people into this religion. We must pray (joyous service) sincerely from our hearts.
In the July 2013 edition of Tenrikyo newsletter, the picture on the front cover could have come from nineteen century Japan.
The June Monthly Service Sermon. My thoughts on the interpretation of Verse 3-28 differs slightly.
If you have borrowed something from another, you will need to pay interest. Return it quickly with a word of thanks. 3-28
The reverend believes that God is talking about the body that one has to return and thanking God for the use of it. But I believe that God is talking about illness. When God gives one an illness, one must reflect, and give the illness back to God. The following verse 3-29 and 3-30 also talks about God’s guidance.
Ms. Yukimoto’s query about where are all the children that participated in Tenrikyo many years ago, should peak the interest of the administration now.
In the Tip of the Writing Brush (Ofudesaki), God begins to refer to himself as Tsukihi or Moon/Sun. The first entry is 6-45. The following:
The true and real God of this world is Moon/Sun. The others are all instruments. 6-50
God as the Moon/Sun is represented by two members of the service, recreating the origin when mankind was created.
But I am not sure if it is coincidence, but in chapter 6, there is reference to why natural disasters occur. The following:
In this world, landslides, thunder, earthquakes and great winds are all from the anger of Moon/Sun (God). 6-90
What are you thinking on hearing this talk? Flames of heaven, rains of fire, and tidal waves in the sea. 6-116
Scientist know that the moon and the sun have affects on the weather of the world. Is it coincidence that God emphasizes himself as Moon/Sun and then explains about the natural disasters in the world?
Could natural disasters be the result of God’s wrath, and disappointment of the spiritual maturity of mankind? Does God want to emphasize this relationship by changing his name to Moon/Sun?
Verse 3-73 has alway puzzled me.
On the eleventh, the nine will be gone and truth forgotten. I await the twenty-sixth of the first month. 3-73
I believe that the nine refers to the 9 who God had selected to participate in the service when all mankind is purified (not sure if these are the instruments of creation) . But due to the continual dust in the minds of mankind, the nine have been sent away, until all mankind is purified. On the 26th of January, Oyasama passed away completing the the passing away of all ten participants selected in performing the service.
I believe that all ten instruments of creation including Oyasama are now helping us to sweep the evils (dusts) of mankind.
I sometimes wonder why our religion does not spread rapidly as God has promised in the Tip of the Writing Brush. Recently I found a verse in the Osashizu which I found interesting.
This is the process of weeding.
After the weeding where the mind is pure, God’s teaching are given, especially the teaching that mankind was created to live the joyous life.
Note: our prayer is only the joyous service (not the twelve songs)
Sometimes I become discouraged because some people in our religion have ill feeling for me. They say or think what right does he have to interpret our sacred teaching, who does he think he is, he is not even a reverend, or even that I am evil.
I do admit that I am not even close to being good or spirited. But I believe the teachings have made me a better person. By finding the truth or the “Origin”, I have a starting point where I can become spirited. It is the Tip of the Writing Brush that I have found that encourages me to continue my attempt to share our religion to the world. If I as a selfish and arrogant person can become more spirited, it would be much easier for others.
There is not an untruth in my website on the interpretation of the Sacred Book, the Tip of the Writing Brush. If anyone should find an error please let me know. Please open your minds to different interpretations. For those who ignore me or think that I am on a false path, time will tell. Even Judas in the bible served a purpose for God. Hopefully I am on the true path that will save the world?
What is the term weeding and fertlilizing which is used in the Tip of the Writing Brush. My interpretation is that weeds are the evils (dusts) that God helps us sweep away with our prayers. Sweeping the evils leads to purity of the mind. Purity of the mind leads us to understand God’s truth. Fertilizing is the process of understanding the Origin that mankind was created to live a joyous life. Fertilizing leads to true sincerity and the mind becoming spirited.
God helps to weed (sweep our evils by the joyous service) and helps us understand (fertilize) the origin. When this occurs more people will have true sincerity and become spirited. This is why the Joyous service is so important for the salvation of the world. The Path starts with this important prayer to God.
note: the joyous service does not include the twelve songs
All religions profess that they have God’s truth. But what is God’s truth? In the Heaven’s Truth (Tenrikyo) religion, we must first believe from our hearts that all mankind was created to live a joyous life. This truth, gives us our spiritual starting point.
Even our prayer (Joyous service) represents the beginning of mankind. It is this origin that is the most important truth in our eventual salvation. Going further in understanding, it is the cause of the origin that we must believe from our hearts. God created all mankind to live the joyous life. This is the ultimate truth.
From my understanding, our prayer serves two purposes. First it makes one aware that mankind was created by God to live the joyous life. Second, it is a prayer to God to help all mankind sweep evil (arrogance, greed, and self love) from their minds. When this happen, all mankind will be purified from the innermost heart and live joyously.
The destiny of our world believe it or not depends on the propagation of this special prayer. In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following:
To explain what this path is about.
God will teach them the hand movements of the service (the cause of the beginning of mankind). 10-31
When God takes them forth all over the world,
the stand will be completed of itself (the joyous world will occur) 10-32
This is why our prayer in our religion is the most important for the world’s salvation. We must spread God’s ultimate truth.
In the Tip of the Writing Brush, the teodori is mentioned a few times. The wide held belief is that the teodori is the twelve songs and the introduction (yorozuyo). But could it be that the teodori refers to the daily prayer service? There is no mention of the 12 songs or the introduction in the sacred book. It is only assumed that the teodori represents parts 4 and 5. By observation the daily prayer is a hand dance. The Iki teodori is the grant of the hand dance. The first part of this prayer is performed similar to our daily service with only our hands moving.
In summary, the teodori is our daily service prayer which is similar to the Kagura Service, except the 3rd part is performed only 9 times instead of 21 times.
The translation of our salvation service is as follows:
Evil sweeping, save them please. Universal Saving God.
Initially I had translated as “Save us please“, but on further research of the origination of the prayer, “Save them please” will be more appropriate. The following are the reasons why:
The prayer for salvation was created after a disturbance by monks who were opposed to the religion. Instead of asking God to punish them, a prayer was created to help.
Also the following verse refers to who the service is trying to save.
This Service, from where do you think they will come from?
From the high places they will come spiritedly. 2-4
The service is directed toward the noble people that do not know the teachings. We are praying not for ourselves to be saved, but for the salvation of others. This is appropriate to our religion where salvation comes from saving others.
It seems like all my life I have been trying to control my anger. Yes, anger management. I keep promising myself that I can arrest this emotion, but I always seem to fail. Why is anger so difficult to prevent for some people?
We are taught in our religion that if we have anger, we do not know God’s truth. I always wondered if this was true. I appear to have anger often, so according to my church, I must not know God’s truth. Today when I was shouting at someone on the phone, it hit me that I may not know God’s truth. Let me explain.
One of God’s truths is that arrogance is one of the evils of the mind. Arrogance is the belief that one is superior to another person. Anger is an emotion caused by a stimulus (another person) and by one’s arrogance. With out having both, anger will not arise. So if we can remove either one, than anger will not appear. The stimulus we cannot control, and may appear at any moment, but our arrogance we can always control.
So it was with this lack of the truth that I was trying to control my anger. But from today, I will try to eliminate arrogance from my mind, and will see if anger decreases when I am confronted with situations that I do not agree with. I will let you know if I am successful. Remove arrogance from your minds!
Today, I was saddened by the tragedy that was caused by evil. Throughout the world there are many people that do not have God’s truth. Today’s tragedy occurs daily in some parts of the world. These people do not know God’s truth. There are some in our religion who are satisfied with the spread of our religion. But most of the world does not even know of our teachings and religion. These senseless killings will continue until the world is made aware of God’s truth.
We place importance on dancing the twelve songs and place less importance on the most sacred prayer that God has given us, the joyous service. This sacred prayer is also performed in a foreign language that the world cannot understand. It is with this urgency that we must teach the world our sacred prayer, especially in a language they can understand.
How important is our prayer? When opponents of our religion threatened the lives of the early followers, and ransacked the service area, God created a prayer asking to sweep away the evils (greed, arrogance, and self love) in the minds of the people who committed these evil acts. Instead of asking for punishment of the perpetrators, a prayer to save them was performed.
It is this prayer that asks God to show the world that the law of cause and effect is a reality. Good thoughts and actions result in joy, and evil thoughts and action result in future suffering for the perpetrator. With the acceptance of our prayers, the lapse between cause and effect will be shortened. When this happens, the relationship between cause and effect will be understood. It will be easier to eliminate evil from our minds.
It is this prayer that will help the world see the relationship between cause and effect that we must show the world. This will eventually prevent the tragedies that occurs daily in the world. Please make it easier for the world to understand our religion and God’s truth.
Summary of the Tip of the Writing Brush.
There is innen and karma (causality). Evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) thoughts and actions cause sufferings. Good thoughts and actions cause joy in the future. This relationship is difficult to see because the lapse of time between the cause and effect may be too prolonged (reincarnation).
God seeing this sufferings in the world, wanted to help his children. God created a prayer asking to sweep away these evils from our minds. On acceptance of this prayer, God begins to shorten the time lapse between cause and effect. This relationship between cause and effect becomes easier to understand. With the understanding of this relationship, we are able to eliminate evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from our minds by ourselves.
With the elimination of evils from our minds, there will only be joy in the future (cause and effect).
I shall let you dig up the root of this world’s origin
If you have the strength, do your best to dig it up. 5-85
I shall let you uncover the cause of the origin beginnings.
If you have the strength, do your best to dig it us. 5-85
What does this means? It means that we need to find out why God created mankind. Mankind was created by God to live a joyous life. When this is realized, the following is realized:
If only you have dug up this root completely,
no one will be your match, whoever one may be 5-86
In our religion, there are many who are adamant that we return to Ojiba to give thanks to God. It is said that God and Oyasama live in Ojiba. Recently in the Tenrikyo Newsletter, the Bishop proposed a relationship between the umbilical cord, belly button, child, and mother and compared it with our attachment to Ojiba and the Kanrodai. He related this to how important it is for the world to visit Ojiba to give thanks to God. Please read this article in the newsletter.
In the Tip of the Writing Brush, there is no reference to the importance of visiting Ojiba. If anyone finds this reference please let me know. To my knowledge Jiba is the location where human beings were created. This is clearly stated in the Tip of the Writing Brush. The Kanrodai will be erected when all mankind is purified at this site.
In the Tip of the Writing Brush, the importance of understanding the “Origin” is referenced many times. More important it is the “moto naru” or the conditions before the origin (becoming origin) that is emphasized. This condition before the origin, I believe is referring to two conditions that existed before the creation of mankind. The first is God’s desire to create mankind to live a Joyous life. The second is the purity of mind of the instruments used in the creation and the purity of the mind of God. The Kanrodai and Ojiba represent these two concepts of the origin. It is these two important facts that we must understand for us to be saved. We must return to the conditions before the origin.
In summary, the Ojiba and the Kanrodai are very important. I believe that if we can, we should visit this important site. But if we cannot, like the majority of the world, we can understand what they represent. They represent the conditions before the origin. They represent purity of mind, and the hope of God for mankind. We all can return to this origin, even if we can not physically.
Though there should be nothing called illness in human beings, no one knows the beginning of this world. Verse 9-10
Because of my desire to have you know this, Little by little, I began doctors and medicine for weeding and fertilizing. Verse 9-11.
Discussion: It is ambiguous if verse 9-11 is talking about the first part of verse 9-10, or about the beginning of the world. Possibly verse 9-10 can be translated as though there should be nothing called illness in human beings, no one knows this. Let us presume, verse 9-10 is referring to the nonexistence of illness. In the Ofudesaki, there is mention of the term weed a couple of times. Weeding in my opinion refers to our prayer of removing evils (greed, arrogance, and self love) from our minds. Fertilizing refers to having true sincerity and knowing the origin that all mankind was created to live a joyous life. In summary, weeding and fertilizing removes evil from our minds. We need both for the elimination of evils from our minds. When this occurs illness will become less frequent, and the joyous world will come one day sooner.
There is an analogy using doctors and medicine in weeding and fertilizing. Doctors remove illness (weeding) from our bodies utilizing medicine (fertilizer). But illness should not exist. God created doctors and medicine to eliminate disease, that should not exist. God is emphasizing that illness should not exist by creating doctors and medicine.
What do you think this Stand is?
It is the Parent of Nihon 10-22
If you but sincerely think this to be true
God will discern it and assure anything whatever 10-23
Since I, God give my assurance,
there will not be even a single failure in a thousand. 10-24
How are you hearing this talk?
It is about the Service of the Kanrodai 10-25
10-22 refers to Ojiba where the first human beings were created. This is where the Kanrodai will be completed when all mankind is purified in mind.
10-23 says that if we believe this from our hearts, that God will assure us anything (believe that all mankind was created to live a joyous life).
10-24 says that there will be no failures in our prayer if we believe all mankind was created to live a joyous life.
10-25 confirms that it is the Service of the Kanrodai, or the joyous service that God will respond to.
In summary, we must believe from our hearts that all mankind was created to live a joyous life for our special prayer to be accepted by God.
