Suppose we do not understand the first verse of the Ofudesaki, which is the most sacred scripture in Tenrikyo? Would we be able to understand God’s teachings?
The first verse in the Ofudesaki is the most important verse. God tells us we do not understand the “Mune”. Tenrikyo Church leaders define mune as the God’s heart or God’s mind. It is likely that we do not understand God’s mind or heart. But is this the real message God wants us to understand. The word mune can also be translated as spirit or soul. Therefore God tells us we do not understand our own souls. What did not God place the word tamashii or tamahii instead of mune? The Ofudesaki is written in waka style poetry which limits the amount of syllables in each verse. Mune has 2 syllables, while tamahii has 4 syllables, making it easier to convey God’s message in any verse where the soul is placed.
What is the soul, or what is our own soul? Let’s review what most people in the world believe. Most people believe that because of our soul we live for eternity. When our physical body stops functioning, our souls leave our bodies. Many believe it goes to heaven, and others believe it returns back to earth to begin a new life as in reincarnation. This we can all agree on?
What does the soul do while in the body? In the Ofudesaki the phrase “mune no uchi yori” or what comes from our souls appears many times. Our fates come from our souls. How are our fates created. God tells us that our soul is like the sand in the filtering system which collects our demerits from acting on our negative thoughts (see Ofudesaki 3: 11) Our souls store them, and eventually manifest them back to us as suffering when the right opportunity appears. So it is our souls that monitor our behavior. We reap what we have sowed because of our own souls.
When our physical bodies dies, it takes our negative fates and their associated negative thought or thoughts to our next destination. Death does not give us a fresh start in our next life.
So now we know why suffering or joy occurs. It is the appearance of karma for what we have done. But if suffering appears, are we just to suffer? God tells us we do not have to suffer. If we can purify our minds of negative thought, our soul will only bring forth health and happiness. How do we purify our minds? God tells us when suffering appears, not to blame others or God, but to ponder our own minds that brought upon these sufferings. By doing this we can eventually purify our minds. Again when our minds are pure only health and happiness will appear from our own souls.
Again our religion is simple. God wants us to attain the pure mind. When the mind is pure, only health and happiness will manifest from our own souls. This is God’s teachings.

天理教で最も神聖な経典であるおふでさきの第一節が理解できないとしましょうか。 神の教えを理解できるでしょうか。
おふでさきの最初の節は最も重要な節である。神は私たちに 「むね 」を理解していないと告げている。天理教教は「むね」を「神の心」と定義している。私たちは神の心や心を理解していないのであろう。しかし、これこそ神が私たちに理解させたい本当のメッセージなのだろうか。ムネという言葉は霊魂とも訳される。それゆえ、神は私たちが自分の魂を理解していないと語っているのだ。神はムネの代わりにタマシイやタマヒイという言葉を置かなかったのだろうか。 おふでさきは和歌で書かれている。むね」は2音節、「たまひい」は4音節であるこれによって、魂が置かれているどの節でも、神のメッセージを伝えやすくなる。
魂とは何か、自分自身の魂とは何か。世の中のほとんどの人が信じていることを復習してみよう。ほとんどの人は、魂のおかげで私たちは永遠に生きられると信じている。肉体が機能しなくなると、魂は肉体を離れる。魂は天国に行くと信じている人もいれば、輪廻転生のように地上に戻って新しい人生を始めると信じている人もいる。この点については、誰もが同意できるのではないだろうか。
魂は肉体の中で何をしているのか？ おふでさき』には「むねのうちより」という言葉が何度も出てくる。 運命は魂から生まれる。運命はどのようにして生まれるのか。私たちの魂は、否定的な考えで行動することによって生じる私たちのデメリットを集めるフィルターシステムの砂のようなものだと神は教えている（おふでさき3：11参照）。 つまり、私たちの行動を監視しているのは魂なのだ。私たちが蒔いた種を刈り取るのは、私たち自身の魂のせいなのだ。
私たちの肉体が死ぬと、ネガティブな運命とそれに伴うネガティブな思考が次の目的地へと運ばれる。死んでも、次の人生で再出発できるわけではない。
これで、苦しみや喜びがなぜ起こるのかがわかった。それは、私たちが行ったことに対するカルマの現れなのだ。でも、苦しみが現れたら、私たちはただ苦しむだけなのでしょうか？神は私たちに苦しむ必要はないと言っている。 否定的な思考から kokoro (mind) を浄化することができれば、私たちの魂は健康と幸福をもたらすだけなのだ。Kokoro (mind) を浄化するにはどうすればいいのだろう？神は、苦しみが現れたら、他人や神を責めるのではなく、苦しみをもたらした自分自身の心を考えなさいと教えている。そうすることで、私たちは最終的に kokoro (mind) を浄化することができる。私たちの kokoro (mind) が浄化されたとき、私たち自身の魂から健康と幸福だけが現れるのだ。
繰り返すが、私たちの宗教はシンプルだ。神は私たちが純粋な kokoro (mind) を獲得することを望んでいる。Kokoro (mind) が純粋であれば、私たち自身の魂から健康と幸福だけが現れる。これが神の教えだ。
