CHAPTER 1

OFUDESAKI/CHAPTER 1/ 1869  TENRIKYO

Yorozuyo no sekai ichiretsu miharasedo

Mune no wakarita mono wa nai kara    1-1  (verify 17-17)

Looking all over the world and through all ages,

there is no one who understands the heart (soul). *

Sono hazu ya toite kikashita koto wa nai

Nanimo shiran ga muri de nai zo ya 1-2

So should it be, for I have never taught it.

It is natural that you do not know anything.

Konotabi wa Kami ga omete i arawarete

Nanika isai o toite kikasuru 1-3

At this time God comes out and reveals herself,

and will inform and explain every detail.

Kono tokoro Yamato no Jiba no kamigata to

yute iredomo moto shiromai 1-4

This place, the Ojiba in Yamato, the residence of God,

you are calling, but you may not know the Origin.

Kono moto o kuwashiku kiita koto naraba

Ikana mono demo mina koishi naru 1-5

This Origin if listened in full,

whoever you are, everyone will become yearning.

Kiki takuba tazune kuru nara yute kikaso

Yorozu isai no moto no innen 1-6

If you wish to know and will come to me, I shall teach

all the details of the causality of the Origin

(mankind was created to live a joyous life).

Kami ga dete nanika isai o toku naraba

sekai ichiretsu kokoro isamuru 1-7

If God is revealed and explains the truth of all things in detail.

In the world, everyone’s mind will be spirited.

Ichiretsu ni hayaku tasuke o isogu kara

sekai no kokoro isame kakarite 1-8

As I am in haste to save all of you quickly,

the world’s mind I set out to make spirited.

Dandan to kokoro isande kuru naraba

Sekai yononaka tokoro hanjo 1-9

Little by little, if they come spirited in mind

in the world there will be prosperity everywhere (due to what the soul brings about).

Konosaki wa Kagura-zutome no te o tsukete

Minna sorote Tsutome matsu nari 1-10

Hereafter, Perform the Kagura Service with the hands.

Everyone assembled, looking forward to what the service brings forth (God’s blessings of illness as guidance/ bringing new members to our churches/ a service praying for all mankind).

Mina sorote hayaku tsutome o suru naraba

Soba ga isameba Kami mo isamuru 1-11

When all are assembled and quickly perform the Service,

those nearby will become spirited. God will also be spirited (the Service brings people to us to teach the truth so they can be saved).

Ichiretsu ni Kami no kokoro ga izumu nara

Mono no ryuke ga mina izumu nari 1-12

When the mind of God is depressed over everything,

the growth of crops (members) will be all depressed.

Ryukei no izumu kokoro wa kinodoku ya

Izuman yo to hayaku isame yo 1-13

The mind that causes depressed crops (no members) is pitiful.

So they are not depressed, quickly become spirited (pure mind).

Ryukei ga isami deru yo to omou nara

Kagura-zutome ya Teodori o seyo 1-14

If your thoughts are for the crops (members) to appear spirited,

perform the Kagura Service (Joyous Service at Jiba)  and the hand dance (Joyous Service).

Konotabi wa hayaku Teodori hajime kake

Kore ga aizu no fushigi naru zo ya 1-15

At this time quickly begin the Hand dance (Joyous service).

This is a signal for a miraculous occurrence (God’s workings of bringing people to our churches / sign for a sign).

Kono aizu fushigi to yute miete nai

Sono hi kitareba tashika wakaru zo 1-16

This signal (Joyous Service), speaking about the miraculous occurrence it has not been seen (God’s guidance/blessings as illness).

When this day arrives, they (high mountain) will certainly understand (Jan. 26 1887).

Sono hi kite nanika wakari ga tsuita nara

Ikana mono demo mina ga kanshin 1-17

When the day comes, and understanding of something (miracle) comes,

Whoever they may be, everyone will be content. (interested/satisfied).

Miete kara toite kakaru wa sekainami

Mien saki kara toite oku zo ya 1-18

To teach/explain of things after they appear is the way of the world.

I teach of things before they appear.

Konasaki wa kami taru kokoro dandan to

kokoro shizumete waboku naru yo 1-19

Hereafter, the minds of those in high places will gradually

calm their minds (remove dusts) and become friendly.

Kono waboku mutsukashi yoni are keredo

Dandan Kami ga shugo suru nari 1-20

This harmony may seem difficult to attain,

But it will bear fruit (become) because God will provide protection (safeguard) little by little.

Kono yo wa rii de semetaru sekai nari

Nanika yorozu o uta no ri de seme 1-21

In this world, I will attack by reason. What appears in the world,

in everything all will be attacked (criticized) with the reason in verse (Ofudesaki).

Semeru tote tezashi suru dewa nai hodoni

kuchi demo yuwan fudesaki no seme 1-22

I shall attack, though not by force,

or say by mouth, but I will attack by the Tip of the Writing Brush (Ofudesaki).

Nanimo kamo chigawan koto wa yokeredomo

Chigai aru nara uta de shirasuru 1-23

In everything, to be wrong (in mind) is to be avoided.

But if you are wrong, I shall inform you by verse (directed to the early followers).

Shirashita araware deru wa kinodoku ya

Ikana yamai mo kokoro kara tote 1-24

When my warnings become manifested (God’s guidance/weeding), it is unfortunate.

Any illness also is from the mind.

Yamai tote sekainami dewa nai hodoni

Kami no rippuku imazo arawasu 1-25

What you are calling an illness is not an ordinary one.

It is the anger of God now being shown (Shuji leg pain).

Imamade mo kami no yu koto kikan kara

Zehi naku omote arawashita nari 1-26

Also, up to now, you have not listened to what God said.

Sadly thinking about it, without fail it has come to be revealed.

Kora hodono Kami no zannen deteru kara

Isha mo kusuri mo kore wa kanawan 1-27

because God’s regret is now being shown,

physicians and also medicine will have no affect.

Kore bakari hitonami ya towa omouna yo

Nandemo kore wa uta de semekiru 1-28

Never think of this only as ordinary

By all means, I shall attack this with verse.

Konotabi wa yashiki no soji sukiyaka ni

Shitatete miseru kore o mite kure 1-29

This time, the sweeping of the residence thoroughly

will be shown (purify the minds of early followers). Come and see it.

Soji sai sukiyaka shitaru koto naraba

Shirite hanashite hanashi suru nari 1-30

When this cleaning is thoroughly done,

The talk will be understood and spoken of (will bear fruit).

Koremade no zannen naru wa nanino koto

Ashi no chinba ga ichi no zannen 1-31

What is the meaning of the regret thus far?

The lameness of your leg is the location of the regret (Talking to Shuji/son of the foundress).

Kono ashi wa yamai to yute iru keredo

Yamai dewa nai Kami no rippuku 1-32

You are saying this leg is affected by illness.

It is not an illness. It is God’s anger.

Rippuku mo chotto no koto dewa nai hodoni

Tsumori kasanari yue no koto nari 1-33

This anger also is not a small matter.

It has resulted because it accumulated and piled up.

Rippuku mo naniyue naru to yu naraba

Akuji ga nokan yue no koto nari 1-34

About this anger, to say why it will occur

This matter has resulted because the cause, the wrongdoing has not been removed.

Kono akuji sukiyaka noken koto nitewa

Fushin no jama ni naru to koso shire 1-35

This evil, if it is not clearly removed,

It will become a hindrance to construction. Understand for sure.

Kono akuji nanbo shibutoi mono ya tote

Kami ga semekiri nokete miseru de 1-36

This wrong doing however stubborn it may be,

God will attack it, and show you how to remove it (illness as guidance).

Kono akuji sukiyaka noketa koto naraba

Ashi no chinba mo sukiyaka to naru 1-37

If this wrongdoing is completely cleared away,

the lameness of your leg will also quickly be (removed).

Ashi saika sukiyaka naori shita naraba

Ato wa fushin no moyo bakari o 1-38

If only your leg is completely healed,

afterwards it will be the preparation for construction only (spreading God’s truth).

Choto hanashi shogatsu misoka to hi o kirite

okuru mo Kami no kokoro kara tote 1-39

Just a word, by the end of the last day of the first month,

to take (Oyasama) is by the intention (mind) of God. 

Soba na mono nani goto suru to omoedomo

Saki naru koto o shiran yue nari 1-40

You close to me question what I will do.

This is because you do not know what is to occur in the future.

Sono hi kite mietaru naraba soba na mono

kami no yu koto nanimo chigawan 1-41

When the day arrives (Jan. 26, 1887) and is seen, those close to me

will know that what God says, there is not any error.

Imamade wa Kami no yu koto utagote

Nanimo uso ya to yute ita nari 1-42

Until now, you have doubted the words spoken by God,

saying that they will all prove to be false.

Kono yo o hajimeta Kami no yu koto ni

Sen ni hitotsu mo chigau koto nashi 1-43

Among the words of God , who began this world,

there is not an error in one in a thousand.

Dandan to mieta kita nara tokushin se

Ikana kokoro mo mina arawareru 1-44

If you begin to see this step by step, be convinced

that every kind of mind will be revealed (by illness or disorder by the performance of the prayer).

Yorozuyo no sekaiju o miwataseba

Michi no shidai mo iroiro ni aru 1-45

Looking out over the world through all generations

Dependent on the path, there are also various burdens (consequences).

Konosaki wa michi ni tatoete hanashi suru

Doko no koto tomo sadani yuwan de 1-46

Hereafter, I will speak to illustrate the path

Certainly not saying concerning what place in particular.

Yamasaka ya ibara guro mo gakemichi mo

tsurugi no naka mo torinuke tara 1-47

Through Mountain slopes and tangles of thorny shrubs, cliff roads, also

within (surrounded) swords, if one takes on to the end (perseveres).

Mada mieru hi no naka mo ari fuchinaka mo

Sore o koshitara hosoi michi ari 1-48

Not yet seen, will also be fire within, and also abyss within.

If one crosses them, there will be a narrow path.

Hosomichi o dandan koseba omichi ya

Kore ga tashikana honmichi de aru 1-49

Step by step crossing over the narrow path, this is the way

This is the definite main path that exists.

Kono hanashi hoka no koto dewa nai hodoni

Kami ichijo de kore waga koto 1-50

This talk, concerning this matter is not about others. Therefore

it is a matter of your own, for the coming forth of God’s assistance.

Imamade wa uchi naru koto o bakari nari

Mo korekara wa monku kawaru zo 1-51

Until now, my talks have consisted of only of what would happen within.

Further after this, I shall change the topic.

Yorozuyo ni sekai no tokoro miwatasedo

Ashiki no mono wa sarani nai zo ya 1-52

Through generation, looking all over the places in the world,

there is no one after all that is evil (bad).

Ichiretsu ni ashiki to yute nai keredo

Choto no hokori ga tsuita yue nari 1-53

Although among all mankind, there is no one said to be evil

Just a little dust is said to have become stuck.

Konosaki wa kokoro shizumete shiyan seyo

Ato de kokwai naki yone seyo 1-54

Hereafter, calm your mind and ponder.

Afterwards, it will be frightening and lamenting. Start shaking

Imamade wa nagai dochu michisugara

Yohodo taikutsu shita de aro na 1-55

Until now, a long earthy path you have relied on

Resulting in a path of great boredom, which exist?

Konotabi wa mo tashika naru mairisho

Miete kita zoe tokushin o seyo 1-56

This time, a definite becoming place of worship

has begun to appear (Ojiba). Be convinced of it.

Korekara wa nagai dochu michisugara

Toite kikasuru tokuto shiyan o 1-57

From now on the long worldly path relied on

I will explain and let you listen. Fully ponder.

Konosaki wa uchi o osameru moyodate

Kami no ho niwa kokoro sekikomu 1-58

From now on, preparing to settle (the minds) within.

From God’s perspective, hastens (to purify) their minds.

Dandan to kami no yu koto kiite kure

Ashiki no koto wa sarani yuwan de 1-59

Little by little, God’s sayings listen and come.

Evil things, furthermore I do not say.

kono kodomo ni nen san nen shikomo to

Yute iredomo Kami no tebanare. 1-60

This child, two years, three years you wish to train (prepare)

you say, but God has detached.

Shiyan seyo oya ga ika hodo omotemo

Kami no tebanare kore wa kanawan 1-61

Ponder, the Parent how much she may desire,

God’ detachment, this (her wish) will not come true.

Kono yo wa akuji majiri de aru karani

Innen tsukeru koto wa ikan de 1-62

Since this world is mixed with evil deeds (acting on evil thoughts).

Causality (fate) attaching circumstances are regrettable.

Waga mi niwa mo goju ya to omoedomo

Kami no me niwa mada saki ga aru. 1-63

One’s own body you are thinking is already 50,

Yet in God’s eyes, you still have a future.

Kotoshi yori rokuju nen wa shikkari to

Kami no ho niwa shikato ukekyaku 1-64

From this year, 60 years with certainty,

God’s direction (toward), if you certainly follow.

Korekara wa kokoro shikkari irekae yo

Akuji harote wakaki nyobo 1-65

After this, replace your mind firmly,

Sweep evil, young wife.

Kore totemo mutsukashi yoni aru kekredo

Kami ga deta nara morote kuru zo ya 1-66

This may appear very difficult (obtain wife) but

when God comes forth, (she will) approvingly come.

Nichinichi ni kokoro tsukushita sono ue wa

Ato no shihai o yorozu makaseru 1-67

Every day, the mind of devotion. That matter (devoted mind occurring),

the later directions will all be entrusted to you.

Go nin aru naka no ni nin wa uchi ni oke

Ato san nin wa Kami no hikiuke 1-68

Among the five that exist, leave two persons at home.

The remaining 3 persons are God’s responsibility

Yorozuyo no sekai no koto o miharashite.

Kokoro shizumete shiyan shite miyo 1-69

Through all generations, looking at the world’s matters,

calm your mind, and ponder over them.

Imamade mo kami no sekai de aru keredo

Nakadachi suru wa ima ga hajime ya 1-70

Until now, God’s world it has always been, but

it is the first time that I act to mediate.

Korekara wa sekai no hito wa okashiogaru

Nambo warotemo kore ga daiichi 1-71

After this, the people in the world may be amused.

However much they may laugh, this is foremost.

Sekai niwa nani goto suru to yu de aro

Hito no warai o Kami ga tanoshimu 1-72

The world will say what are you doing.

The laughter of people is God’s delight.

Meme no omou kokoro wa ikan de na

Kami no kokoro wa mina chigau de na 1-73

The mind that thinks about the self is regrettable.

The mind of God differs entirely.

Zensho no innen yosete shugo suru

Kore wa matsudai shikato osamaru 1/74

Previous fate collected, protection (by the soul) will be done.

Forever, this will certainly settle (the heart).

*(The heart (soul) was once pure, but has dust surrounding it. These dusts are the evils of arrogance, greed, and self-love. These dusts are what causes us to have illness or misfortunes in our lives by the principle of Karma, causality or innen).

SUMMARY OF CHAPTER

Chapter 1 and 2 may be summary of Ofudesaki.

God has revealed himself to save the world.

There is no one who knows the pure heart (soul). The pure heart brings upon joy due to  positive causality. It is the heart that carries our fate (karma, innen, causality). It carries the negative energies from our negative thoughts.

Tells us that the “Purpose of Life” is to live a Joyous Life.

God descended from Heaven to save all mankind. Saving implies the return of all mankind to the original pure heart(soul). When this occurs, there will be only joy emanating from the innermost heart.

If we are spirited (mind pure), by the law of cause and effect, our future will be prosperous and joyous. When the world is spirited, there will be everlasting joy.

God tells us how to save others. Perform the Joyous Service (prayer). This service brings people  to our churches. But the service only works with a pure mind of the prayer. This is why God hastens for the early followers to purify their minds.

God says that his workings have not been seen yet , but will come in the future (1887).

God wants the early followers to have a pure mind, so that they can pray to save others. He warns them through the Ofudesaki.

God warns early followers through the Ofudesaki (Tip of the Writing Brush). If early followers do not listen, he then gives guidance through illness (weeding the mind, to remove evil from minds). God enters them, and guides them.

God talks about the path of joy. God tells us that it may not be easy, due to causality. But if we persist by calming our minds when suffering or inconvenience occurs, gradually we can purify our minds. This will bring upon joy in the future. But true joy is shared joy, so we must share the teachings with others (narrow path). This is why God has given us a prayer (Joyous Service) to perform, that will bring others to our churches (narrow path). God is said to compare our minds with that of Oyasama’s  mind during our prayer; and if it is pure, God will give blessings (guidance) to those who are open minded (nihon). They come to us, we teach and pray for them, and they are cured of the illness (guidance).

God then warns Shuji (Oyasama’s son) that his leg pain is a guidance from God; Shuji’s mind is not pure or the followers minds are not pure, and tells him how to purify his mind.

Mankind is not evil: only dusts of greed, arrogance , and self love have surrounded his heart (soul); this dust (evil thoughts)  originates from the mind.

God predicts the passing away of Oyasama (Miki Nakayama) when the early followers finally purify their minds (1887). Why would the passing away be beneficial? This is when God will begin to work, and the Joyous Service begins to become effective in bringing people to our churches.  Oyasama’s soul returns to the original location of creation (Kanrodai), and the world will have access to God. This is why we pray toward the Kanrodai. This pillar will become the shrine of God due to Oyasama returning to the original site of creation in 1887.

Talking to Shuji and early followers  to replace their  minds so that the Joyous Service can become effective. God Promises Shuji  a wife and 60 more years if he follows God’s instructions. This does not occur due to Shuji not following God’s requests.
