What is the mune? God tells us in the first verse of the Ofudesaki, that we do not understand the mune. Tenrikyo Church Headquarter interprets the mune as God’s mind or God’s heart. Yes most people in the world do not understand God’s mind. But is the word mune really God’s mind? If one looks at other verses where mune is used, it does not appear to be God’s mind. It appears that the word mune is the soul. Let me explain.First some dictionaries define mune as the spirit or soul. Also the Ofudesaki is written in waka style poetry, made of syllables of 5-7-7, and 7-7 for each verse. The word mune has only two syllables, while tamashii has 4 syllables, making it difficult to place the word tamashii in each verse.
WHAT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE SOUL?
Most people believe that the soul resides somewhere in our physical bodies. Most people also believe that the soul leaves our bodies when we die. This is why we live for eternity. Some believe that our soul goes to heaven, while others believe in reincarnation.
WHILE IN OUR BODIES, WHAT DOES THE SOUL DO?
In the Ofudesaki, God tells us it is the sand in the filtering of our behavior.(verse 3-11), which collects the demerits from our evil actions, stores them as fate, and eventually releases them as suffering when the right opportunity arise to manifest. The phrase “mune no uchi yori” is in the Ofudesaki. What come from our souls? It is our fates that come from our soul. Therefore our souls monitor our behavior and gives out joy or suffering when we are alive. Many times karma or innen appears in the distant future, many times in our next lifetime.
WHAT INFORMATION DOES THE SOUL TAKE WITH IT WHEN WE DIE?
It definitely does not take our memories. It takes our stored fates that we have created by our actions on our thoughts. This explains why suffering or joy appears in our lives. But besides the fates, it takes the thought or thoughts associated with each fate from the mind. Death therefore does not give us a fresh start in life. We take our fates and associated thoughts with us to our next destination. Does this mean that we have to suffer because of our past lives? Maybe not.
DO WE SUFFER FOR OUR PAST ACTION IN A PREVIOUS LIFETIME?
Remember each fate is associated with the negative thought or thoughts we have acted upon. If we can remove these negative thoughts from our minds, we can possibly lessen our suffering (fate) or eliminate them before they appear. God tells us when we attain the pure mind, only health and happiness will come from our souls. How do we purify our minds? More to come on this in future posts.
