How difficult is it to change a person’s mind? It is truly difficult, especially if information either correct or incorrect has been ingrained in the mind since childhood. I will give an example, the Los Angeles Church Headquarters was having a seminar on the sacred scriptures of the religion. I decided since I had translated the Ofudesaki to English to participate and hand out my translation of the Ofudesaki to the participants. I had also previously sent a copy of the book to the Bishop at the church. But upon my attempt to circulate the books to the participants I was not allowed to, and firmly escorted out of the seminar. I remember as we were escorted to the parking lot, the anger in the face of the Bishop, as I was trying to explain the book to his wife.
I am finding that it is surely difficult to spread the teachings, especially to Tenrikyo members who have been literally brainwashed by church leader’s interpretation of their most sacred scripture. But in the Ofudesaki, God tells us that God will help spread the teachings. How does God do this?
God has granted us a special prayer, the Youki-tsutome. This is a prayer asking God to help us spread the teachings of the soul, and pure mind. God tells us first to spread the teachings about the soul, pure mind, and God’s guidance to everyone. Then God tells us to perform this Service with a pure mind. When God accepts our prayer, God will then proceed to place illness as guidance to the people we have informed of the teachings. How does God place illness? God distinguishes their mind, and places illness dependent on the amount and kind of negative thoughts they have. It is these thoughts that they will act upon, creating their negative fates that the soul collects, stores, and eventually manifest when the right opportunity appears. The right opportunity may not occur in this lifetime, and many times manifested in the next lifetime. This occurs because when our physical body dies, the soul takes our unmanifested fates and their associated thoughts to the next lifetime.
Getting back to what happens when illness is placed by God as guidance. When people understand God’s. guidance, they come to our places of worship to heal their illness given by God. We perform the Osazuke to heal them, and further teach them about the soul, so they can purify their minds. Just to note, I believe that the Osazuke only cures illness that is placed by God as guidance to attract new members to save. It does not cure existing illness, as many Tenrikyo members believe. It is not meant for curing existing illness. The thought that it cures any illness will bring upon only disappointment.
In summary, the Youki-Tsutome and the Osazuke were granted by God to help people outside of the church to understand the soul, to purify the mind. But it appears unusual that for those who understand the teachings in the Ofudesaki to perform these Services to help the current Tenrikyo people understand the teachings. If we perform the Youki-tsutome, will the current members understand God’s guidance when it appears?Do we have the courage and will power to pray for them? If the teachings are to spread, our members must understand the teachings in the Ofudesaki. Yes the people who understand the Ofudesaki , may have to perform the Osazuke on current church members to heal their illness placed by God.
Although this may appear unusual but the performance of the Youki-tsutome and Osazuke to help the current Tenrikyo people may be necessary before we can spread the teachings to the world.
