It is the heart (soul) we must understand to find out why we suffer or have joy in our lives. The following is from the Ofudesaki, the most sacred scripture in the world

These children, the truth from the innermost heart

has been ascertained, any kind of preparation will follow.  4-85

Interpretation:

The understanding of the heart is paramount for the salvation of everyone.
