We Do Not Understand the Heart

There is something that people are overlooking when we discuss the Tenrikyo religion. Yes, we believe in God and Oyasama. We believe that God descended from heaven to save mankind. We believe that it is important to make a pilgrimage to our holy site of the Kanrodai, and most important we have the Service or prayer. But these are all common in most religions. What makes Tenrikyo different from all other religions?
We have a special scripture called the Ofudesaki. Some of you will say that other religions have their sacred scriptures, like the Bible or Koran. Yes, that is correct; but unlike other scriptures, the Ofudesaki gives us instructions to live the Joyous life on earth. I would compare it to a cookbook, which gives us step-by-step instructions on how to be spirited and live the joyous life.
Like a cookbook, one must follow the instructions and utilize the correct ingredients to end up with a delicious product. I believe it is the same with the Ofudesaki. We must understand God’s instructions, and follow it to save the world. Some of you may totally disagree with me, and that is ok. I truly believe that the followers do not understand the most important ingredient in the Ofudesaki. Let me explain.
In the first verse of the Ofudesaki, God tells us that we do not understand the heart.
Through all generations, the world everyone, looking at.
The understanding of the heart, person there is not. 1-1
This is the word for word translation from Japanese. Yet most Tenrikyo members believe that mune is interpreted as God’s heart. There is a big difference between understanding God’s heart and our own hearts! If we cannot even understand the first verse in the Ofudesaki, how are we to understand what comes after. This is why all through the Ofudesaki, God continue to tell us we do not understand the heart.
In song 11 of the Mikagura-uta, I will give you further proof how important understanding the mune is for the salvation of the world. The songs talks about spreading God’s truths . Some will call it niogake, but in the Mikagura-uta, the word will be hinokishin. Hinokishin is spreading God’s truth to others. What do you think God wants us to spread to the world? The last two songs will give you a clue.
Until this time, everyone
did not understand the heart. What regret! Song 11- 9
This year accompanied by the fertilizer (Joyous Service),
many people we cultivated and brought in.
How delightful, how grateful. Song 11-10
From these two songs, we can presume that the understanding of the heart was missing, and God wants us to spread it to others. With the understanding of the mune and spreading of the heart to others, the Joyous Service finally becomes effective. The Joyous Service brings others to our places of worship, so we can further teach them about the heart to purify their own minds.
Some of you may still not understand what the heart is. This is why reading the Ofudesaki is so important. By understanding our own hearts, we can purify our own minds. This is why in our most sacred scripture, God places the most important subject (heart)in the first verse. We must understand the heart to save others. Please join me in the Tenrikyo Ofudesaki Study Group to find out what the heart is.
