What is the translation of “Narimono” ?

In the Ofudesaki, the word narimono appears. What is narimono? Church Headquarter translate it as musical instruments. But is the translation really musical instruments? The word narimono can also be translated as harvest. Could God be talking of a harvest ofnew members to save? The following is from the Ofudesaki:

(Kono koto wa) (nanino koto ya to)(omouna yo)

(tsutome narimono) (hayaku hoshii de) 14-85

Do not wonder what this is about.

I need musical instruments for the Service quickly.

Church interpretation

This matter, of what about, do not think!

The Service harvest (of new members), quickly I want.

_____________________________________________________

(kono tsutome) (douyuu koto ni) (omou kana)

(narimono irete) (ninjuu no moyou) 15-52

What do you think about this Service?

Prepare for the performers including the musical instruments.

Church interpretation

This Service, what is it about, to think wondering?

The harvest (of new members) wanting, the (Service) members’ preparation.

_____________________________________________________

(Saa tanomu) (nani o tanomu to) (omou kana)

(hayaku narimono) (yosete keikou) 15-72

Now a request. What do you think I request?

Quickly assemble the musical instruments and begin practice.

Church interpretation

Now to request, what to request, to think wondering.

Quickly the harvest (of new members), gather to proceed.

_____________________________________________________

(hayabaya to) (narimono nari to) (dashikake yo)

(tsutome bakare o) (seete iru kara) 15-90

Quickly begin to bring out the musical instruments at least.

I am hastening solely for the Service.

Church interpretation

Quickly, the harvest (of new members) resulting in, carry out!

The Service only, because hastening to exist.

_____________________________________________________

In Summary:

It is the Service (Youki-tsutome) that brings upon a harvest (narimono) of new members to save.

What is Salvation?

What does salvation mean? In the majority of religions, salvation means eternal joy in heaven. But in the Ofudesaki, God tells us that we are saved when we attain the pure mind. When the mind is pure, only joy and health will appear from one’s own soul while on earth.

How do we attain salvation, the pure mind? God tells us in the Ofudesaki. We must first understand our own soul. It is because of our own soul that we can live for eternity. It is this soul that leaves our physical bodies when it dies, ascends to heaven, and then returns back to earth to be reborn. But what most people do not understand is what the soul does while it resides in our physical bodies. The soul monitors our behavior. It collects the negative energies created by acting on our negative thoughts, stores them, and eventually returns them back to us as fate (karma or innen) when the right opportunity arises. This right opportunity may not manifest until the next life time. It is the soul that leaves the body, and takes with it the fates that have not manifested, and their associated thoughts they acted upon. This is why we do not start with a clean slate when we are reborn. This is why suffering or joy appears, and why we all have different mindsets.

Now we understand the soul, how do we purify our minds to be saved? God tells us to ponder our own minds instead of blaming others or God when suffering appears from our own soul. Then God tells us when we identify these negative thoughts or emotion, not to act upon them. This is how we gradually purify our minds, by not acting upon our negative thoughts when suffering appears. This is difficult to do because we always want to blame others, especially when they appear to cause our discomforts. But God tells us they are just messenger of our own soul.

In summary, when suffering occurs in our lives, we must understand that it is our own soul that manifest these suffering upon us. We are reaping what we have sowed. But there is hope as we can purify our own minds, by understanding and identifying the negative  thoughts associated with the sufferings; and not acting upon them, we can purify our minds, and eliminate or lessen the sufferings. Again when the mind is pure, only joy and health will appear from our own souls. This is true salvation!

Summary of the Ofudesaki

What is our religion about? What makes it different from any other religion? Unlike other religions, God has given us the instructions to live the “Joyous life”. These instruction are in the Ofudesaki, the most sacred scripture in the world. The Ofudesaki is written in hiragana, and written in waka style poetry. Each verse composed of 5-7-5, and 7-7 syllables. The Tenrikyo religon accepts this scripture to be from God.
To explain why I have written this little pamphlet, let me give you a little history of myself. I grew up in a family that was involved in the Tenrikyo church. We prayed with the seated Service every day, and attended the monthly Service. My Parents eventually became Reverends of the religion. On my part, I accepted the teachings, and reluctantly performed the Youki-tsutome daily, attempted to perform the Yorozuyo and 12 dances, and participated in the pilgrimages to Japan, even receiving my Osazuke by attending the besseki lectures. But about 12 years ago, I started questioning some of the teachings that church leaders advocated. Procedures like why our we dancing in front of God, and reciting what God already knows. Why are we dancing in Japanese attire, and speaking in Japanese? Why are we offering food to God? Why the Osazuke does not always work? What is the purpose of our religion?
Since the Ofudesaki is the core of our teachings, I decided to translate the Ofudesaki word for word, and verse for verse, unlike the translation by Tenrikyo Church Headquarter. To my surprise the translations were not accurate, especially in vital teaching that God wants us to understand. The Ofudesaki is repetitive, and may not be easy to read for people who are impatient, and want to understand quickly. This is why I have written a short pamphlet summarizing the important points of the Ofudesaki. I hope the summary will help you understand the purpose of our religion, and will influence you to read the complete Ofudesaki to understand God’s instructions to save oneself, and also to save the world.

What is the Purpose of Our Religion?

What is the purpose of our religion, Tenrikyo? God gives us a good idea in the first verse of the Ofudesaki. God tells us we do not understand our own soul (mune). It is the soul that God wants us to understand, and spread to the world. Yet today our religion places more importance on ritual, ceremonies, and pilgrimages. Yes our Service (Youki-tsutome and Osazuke) are important, but without knowledge of the soul, these Services will not be effective.

Why is the soul important to understand? It is our own soul that monitors our behavior while present in our bodies. It collects the negative energies created by acting on our negative thoughts and emotions, stores them, and eventually manifest them back to us as sufferings. We reap what we have sowed because of our own soul. Karma or innen usually do not appear immediately. It waits for the right opportunity to manifest. Many time the right opportunities may not appear in this lifetime. When our physical bodies die, it is the soul that leaves the body carrying the unmanifested fates and their associated thoughts to the next destination. Therefore when we are reborn our memories are erased, but we do not begin with a clean slate. This is why suffering and joy appear in our lives; and why each of us have a different mind set.

What do we do when suffering from our soul appears? God tells us not to blame others or God, but to ponder our own minds for the negative thoughts associated with the suffering that is appearing. Then we should not act upon these thoughts. This is how we purify our minds. God tells us that when the mind is pure, one is saved. Only health and happiness will appear from one’s own soul.

This is what we must understand and spread to the world. How do we do this? This is where the Youki-tsutome and the Osazuke come into play. Both of these prayers have been explained in previous posts, so I will not explain it here.

Again, to summarize, we as a religion have a special purpose. It is to spread the truth of the soul. When the world understands the soul, only peace and prosperity will result, as intended when God created human beings.

People cannot understand the first verse in the Ofudesaki. God tells us we do not understand our own soul. Why is understanding the soul so important? But before I answer that question, It is my belief that Tenrikyo people know that the removal of dusts or negative thoughts are what God wants us to do to attain the pure mind. This is why they believe that the performance of the Youki-tsutome will purify their minds. But they do not know that God has already given us the instructions to purify our own minds. We must understand our own soul to do this. This is what Tenrikyo people and the world do not understand. It is our own soul that monitors our behavior while it resides in our physical body. We reap what we have sowed because of the soul. The soul collects our negative energies created by acting on our negative thoughts. It stores, and eventually manifest these negative energies as suffering when the right opportunity appears. Many times these opportunities do not arise in this life time. When our physical bodies die, the soul takes the unmanifested fates and their associated thoughts to the next destination. Therefore when we are reborn, we do not get a fresh start. This is why suffering or joy appears, and why we all have different mind sets. This information is what God wants us to spread to the world. This is the purpose of our religions. It is not the rituals and ceremonies, like other religon that God want us to place importance on. God tells us when suffering comes from the soul, not to blame others, but ponder one’s own mind for the thoughts associated with the suffering. Then we should not act upon these negative thoughts. This is how our appearing fates, help us remove our negative thoughts. For some, this may take some time because they may have much negative fates in their souls, and much associated thoughts ingrained in their minds. But they are persistant in removing their negative thoughts, they can be successful in purifying their minds. What happens when the mind is pure? One is saved. Only health and joy will appear from their own souls. How do we convince people of the soul? This is where the special prayer Youki-tsutome and the Osazuke come into play.

Is Verse 4-91 Correct in the Ofudesaki?

I have always wondered if verse 4-91 was translated correctly in the English translation of the Ofudesaki. The word oshi has many meanings. Of course mute is one of them, but is it the right translation?   Why would the enabling of a mute person to talk God’s salvation?  Is this the purpose of the Youki-tsutome to heal existing disorders?  God does give us a grant to cure illness, the Osazuke. But according to the Ofudesaki, the prayer only cures illness that God has placed as guidance.  So what is the purpose of the Youki-tsutome?

The purpose of the Youki-tsutome is to ask God to help sweep the minds of the people we have introduced the teaching. How does God do this? God places illness as guidance as mentioned in verse 4-91. By these illness God is showing them their future, as they will likely act on their existing negative thoughts in their minds.  It is these negative thoughts that God wants people to eliminate from their minds. If they understand God’s guidance, they will come to our places of worship to be healed by the Osazuke, and given further information so they can purify their minds by themselves.  When their minds are pure of negative thoughts, only joy and health will appear from their own soul. They are then saved.

In summary, this is what verse 4-91 is saying. It is not about a mute person.

Youki-tsutome, A service to save the world

What does God do when God accepts our prayer of the Youki-tsutome. No, God does not help us sweep our own minds. God helps the people who we have informed of the teachings to sweep their minds. How does God do this? God places illness as guidance to help these people understand their own soul. God determines what kind and amount of negative thoughts are in their mind, and places illness as guidance accordingly. It is these thoughts that they will act upon in the future, resulting in their own soul collecting, storing, and eventually manifesting the fates that they have created by acting on their negative emotions and thoughts. If people understand God’s guidance when it appears, they will then come to our places of worship to be healed by the Osazuke. This opportunity also gives us time to further teach them about their own soul to purify their own minds. This is how by the Youki-tsutome and Osazuke, the teachings spread to the world.

Youki-tsutome, A prayer to save the world

This is a Service asking God to sweep the minds of the people we have informed of God’s teachings. It is not a prayer asking God to save ourselves.

Youki-tsutome a Prayer to Save Others

The Youki-tsutome is a prayer that Tenrikyo Church leaders do not understand. This is why our teachings are not spreading to the world. Let me explain:

God has given us this special prayer to help people understand the soul, and what it does. God in the first verse of the most sacred scripture, tells us we do not understand the soul. It is the soul while present in our physical bodies that monitor our behavior, good or bad. This is why we accumulate our fates that we have created ourselves by acting on our emotions and thoughts.  The effect (fate) of our actions usually appear in the distant future, as opportunities to manifest them may not appear until the next lifetime.  This information of the soul is what we must understand and spread to the world.

Getting back to our prayer. The first section is asking God to help people sweep their negative thoughts away. It is these negative thoughts they will act upon that creates their negatve fates of suffering. How does God sweep their negative thoughts?  God distinguishes their minds, and places illness depending on the amount and kind of negative thoughts in their minds. Again it is these thoughts they will act upon in the future if they do not remove these negative thoughts, and create their fates of sufferings.  When these people understand God’s guidance they will come to our places of worship to be healed by the Osazuke, and given further instructions to purify their minds.  This is how the Youki-tsutome and Osazuke help to spread the teachings of the soul.

Then 2nd part of the Youki-tsutome is telling us what to tell people to help them understand our teaching. God tells us to teach them of the Origin of human beings. At first the story of the Origin, I thought it was a myth like the story of Adam and Eve. But I believe it is true, as God tells us that our physical bodies were created by the instruments in the ancient muddy ocean, represented by loaches, and other sea creatures. These  creatures are represented by the earth, as mentioned in the 2nd part of the  Youki-tsutome. From heaven, the pure mind of God was placed into the first couple that started human beings. This event is important, in that the pure mind is necessary for a healthy body and joy in our lives. It is this pure mind that God want us to attain. When the mind is pure, one is saved. Only health and happiness will appear from the soul, as intended when God created human beings.

The third part of the Service , we are asking God to save others quickly. When the world is saved, by purifying their minds, the Kanrodai will be erected, symbolizing peace and prosperity in the world, again as intended when God created human beings.

Unfortunately most Tenrikyo leaders do not understand the purpose of the Youki-tsutome, as they believe it is a prayer asking God to help ourselves purify our minds. This I believe is why our teachings are not spreading to the world. We also do not understand when the performance of the Osazuke is required. It does not cure existing illnesses, but only illness given by God as guidance to help one understand the soul.

In summary I know many people will doubt my opinion on the prayer, but read the Ofudesaki with a open mind, and see if what I have said, makes sense.
