Disappointed

Suppose everyone in the world believed in causality, where are actions result in some type of effect; where good behavior resulted in joy, and bad behavior resulted in suffering back to us. We would not have to spend trillion in weapons, fences, security systems, prisons, military, government, and medicine. We could spend all this extra money on helping others, and making the world better.

This is not possible because most of the world does not believe in causality. And for those who believe in causality or karma, many believe it is a punishment from God. Unfortunately the world believes that our physical bodies and our possessions are what are paramount; and they do not understand that it is our souls that are most important in obtaining joy. What is good for our bodies may not be good for our souls. Greed, arrogance, miserliness, regret, and self-love may be good for the body, but is definitely not good for our souls. We believe that our bodies are borrowed from God, but the soul and the mind is ours.  You can say that the soul has no color or gender. It is our souls that make karma and causality function in the world.

Today I am a little disappointed at my religion Tenrikyo.  It is said that God descended from heaven to teach us about the soul and how to live a joyous life.  In the Ofudesaki, which has over 1,000 verses, God tells us how to purify our minds and live the joyous life. But more important God gives us instruction on how to spread God’s truth to the world. (1) God tells us to understand the soul so we can purify our own minds first. (2) Then God tells us to spread the truth of the soul, which I believe is called hinokishin.  (3) God has given us a special prayer (Joyous Service) asking God to help sweep evil thoughts of greed, arrogance, regret, and self-love from the people we have spread the truth to.  When all 3 of these ingredients are added, then God will bring these people to our churches or places of prayer.  Unfortunately, the most important ingredient of spreading the teaching of the soul is not taking place. This is why in the first verse of the Ofudesaki; God tells us that we do not understand the soul.  Instead, the religion is more concerned about tradition and customs, which I believe is not as important to God.  God does not want praise, or sacrifices; but God wants us understand the soul so we can all live the joyous life.

In our Scripture, God tells us:

However serious an illness will become, I never say that it will not be cured. 12-52 Ofudesaki

In the Bible, Jesus and his disciples were said to have healed the sick. In the beginning of our religion, thousands of people were cured of their illness; but where are the miracles now? 

What are the ingredients to make these miracles happen now? Does this require believing in God and having faith? Does it require making donations or making a pilgrimage to a holy site? The following is from Tenrikyo’s sacred scripture:

The saving of those whom doctors are unable to save is the foundation of the path. You tell them the teachings (about the soul). They listen and they are healed. Oct 17, 1893 Osashizu

 

GOD WILL HEAL YOU IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE SOUL

 

Why would God heal us if we understand the soul?  To answer this question, we must first find out why there is illness and suffering. Why are some people afflicted with cancer? Why do people suffer from diseases? Why do people get into accidents? Why do I have these intense headaches? Why am I depressed? Why do bad people appear in our lives?  Are these random events or planned by God?

God tells us that these events are not random or created by God. God has been a spectator since the creation of mankind.

Though until now God has never come out into the open, no matter what unpleasant occurrences one experienced. 8-66 Ofudesaki

God tells us that it is our own soul that brings upon joy or suffering to us:

Above all else, guard your soul,

for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

God tells us that we do not understand the soul. The first verse of our most sacred scripture begins with:

Looking all over the world and through all ages, I find no one who understands the soul. Ofudesaki 1-1

What is the soul? 

The soul has also been called the heart or the spirit. Scientists have not yet located and verified the existence of the soul in our bodies; but many of us believe that it exists. We know that our physical bodies decay upon our death, but our souls continue for eternity.  The soul by itself is energy that contains our fate and our pattern of thoughts (see figure 1); but when engaged in our borrowed bodies, it collects and stores our merits and demerits, and eventually released them as fate. We reap what we have sowed. The soul is nature’s justice.

Evil thought patterns are arrogance, greed, regret, and self-love. These neural pathways influence our behaviors.

In the world there are two paths, the path of the world and the path of the soul. In the path of the world, one believes that you can do whatever you want and get away with it as long as no one sees you do it.  This is an erroneous path that does not exist. In the path of the soul, it all comes back to you. In the path of the soul, it is the soul that distributes justice (fate) to everyone equally. There is cause and effect. The cause is our action upon our thoughts, and the effect is our fate, which our soul collects, stores and delivers. We reap what we have sowed.

Remember the Christmas song, Santa Claus is coming to town, warning us that Santa Claus knows if you’ve been good or bad. You can say that each of our souls is like Santa Claus; it rewards us when we are good, and gives us suffering (coal) when we are bad. This is the concept of cause (our actions) and effect (fate), known as karma or innen.

But some people will say that they can’t remember having sowed evil, yet they suffer. Others will arrogantly boast that they have done evil, yet they do not suffer.  Unlike Santa Claus, cause and effect is not immediate or within a 12 month period that ends on Christmas. It is as if God places a wall in front of us by the prolonged lapse of time between cause and effect; we cannot see what fates exist around the corner. This lapse of time between cause and effect often extends into our previous and next lifetimes. These are the concepts of reincarnation and karma, where our memories are erased upon our death; but our pattern of thoughts and our fates are preserved to be manifested later in our next lifetime.  Again we eventually reap what we have sowed; there is no exception!  Both our thought patterns we have acted upon, and our fate that were created by acting upon these thought patterns will continue on, even after our physical demise. Again we reap what we have sowed.

Metaphorically, our souls are like little suitcases that contain our pattern of thoughts and our fate, exiting our bodies at death, and entering our new bodies before birth. One can say that we live forever because of the soul.

By what mechanism does the soul operate?

Upon entering our developing bodies, the soul programs our minds with our previous thought patterns (like greed and arrogance) from our past life (figure 2).

The soul enters the body and creates the mind, using the body’s complex neural system. ? represents good thoughts in this example. Most of us will have ? (negative thoughts) also delivered by the soul.

There are no surprises to what thought patterns our bodies receive from our souls. We have the same pattern of thoughts that we had acted upon in our past life. For example, if we succumbed to greed in our past life, we have the same thought of greed in this lifetime. The same neural pathways of greed are reestablished.  One can say that our souls upon entering our bodies, create and restore our own individualized minds! We can only change these thought patterns by ourselves. The soul will help us do this if we understand the soul.

Besides our thought patterns, the soul also contains our fates, that were created by acting on these good or evil thoughts. These fate are eventually released back to us as joy or sufferings by the soul. We reap what we have sowed. For example if we acted upon the thought of greed in the past, the soul will bring upon sufferings and obstacles back to us to remind us of these thoughts we had acted upon.  One can say that our fates are closely associated with our current neural pathways (thoughts), since it is these same thoughts that we had acted upon in the past.

God tells us that we must remove evil thoughts from our minds. These evil thoughts are the origin of our sufferings. They influence our actions, especially when obstacles appear in our lives. By acting on these evil thoughts, we create our negative fate that the soul collects and eventually distributes back to us.

But how do we know if we have evil thoughts in our minds?  These negative thoughts often bring upon an emotion or temptation. For example, when we have the thought of arrogance, often the emotion of anger will arise. Temptation appears when we have the thought of greed or self-love in our minds. The presence of these negative emotions or feelings are telltale signs that we have evil thoughts in our minds. What do we do when anger or temptation arises from these negative thoughts?

Most people will direct their anger or temptation at what appears to be the source, which could be an coworker, stranger, spouse, circumstance or even God. But if we understand the soul, we acknowledge that it is our own soul that brings upon these challenges or fates. These obstacles are only messengers of our souls. Our efforts will be directed to calm our minds, and ponder our evil thoughts; therefore not acting upon what emotions (like anger) were elicited by them. By this process, the neural pathway of the evil thought becomes less prominent, and the emotions they elicit will also decrease. This is how we gradually eliminate our evil thoughts.

Eventually by this process of not acting on our evil thoughts, especially when our soul bring upon sufferings, we can purify both our minds and our souls; where only positive thoughts emerge from our minds, and joy flows from our souls.

What happen when we act on our evil thoughts?

When we act on our evil thoughts, we cause suffering to others, and more evil thoughts are created in our own minds. The neural pathways for these thought become stronger, and the emotions they elicits becomes stronger to resist. This causes us to continually act upon our evil thoughts, causing  more demerits which our soul collects. The soul eventually releases these demerits (energies) as fate.   The cycle of suffering will continue until we understand the soul.

God is not on the sideline anymore; but will begin to work to have the world understand the soul. God grants us the blessings of healing , so we can begin the process of purifying our minds of greed, arrogance, regret and self love. By this process, we can prevent any illness or suffering in the future by our own efforts.

We believe that the soul is composed of energies. These energies will manifest into our fates and our thought patterns (figure 1) in our minds. It is these thought patterns and their proportions that distinguish each individual from the other. It is these thought patterns that influence our behaviors, especially when fate is manifested by our souls.

God tells us that it is our own soul that monitors our thought patterns and behaviors by collecting and storing our merits and demerits as energy, and it eventually releases them as joy or suffering back to us as fate. We reap what we have sowed. But some people will say that they can’t remember having sowed evil, yet they suffer. Others will arrogantly boast that they have done evil, yet they do not suffer. Something Racism has in Common

Understanding the soul and reincarnation is important because it will set you free from hatred and discrimination.   We all know that our physical bodies eventually decays; but we can agree that some part of us continues forever.  Some call this invisible organ the soul, heart, or spirit.  It is this soul that collects our demerits and merits, and eventually releases it back to us as suffering or joy. We reap what we have sowed.  The soul also retains our pattern of thoughts after our physical death, and restores it when it reenters a developing body in our next life.  The racist in this life will have the same arrogant thoughts in their next life; and the philanthropist will have the same good thoughts in their next life.

It is ironic that some will believe that because we are white or black today, we have more in common with our ancestors who were of same color; but the true fact is that we do not know what race or gender we were before.  Those that boast the superiority of their race have only one thing in common. No, it is not the same color of skin; but they all have the evil thought of arrogance in their minds. It is this thought that their souls will transfer to their next life, irregardless of what color or gender they are now.  The color of our skins is not important; it is what is in our minds that distinguish each of us from each other.  Some of us will have more in common with our opposition. It is our evil thoughts that we have in common.  It is not our color, but these thoughts that will eventually determine our fate.

The Prayer to Sweep Evil

The Tenrikyo prayer is a special unique prayer asking God to help remove evil.

“Evil sweeping. Save them please, Universal Saving God”

This evil is not from an outside source like the devil or Satan. This evil exists in all of our minds. Yes, it is our evil thoughts! These evil thoughts are greed, regret, arrogance, and self-love. God tells us that these evil thoughts are the source of world suffering. God tells us that there is no one who is evil; but there are paths of the mistaken mind. These paths of acting on our evil thoughts lead to others suffering; but it also leads to our own sufferings. We reap what we have sowed.

Born Again

What does it mean to be born again in Tenrikyo? In Tenrikyo, I was taught about the dusts that are called evil thoughts. These are the thoughts of greed, arrogance, regret, and self-love. We were taught that they are the causes of suffering and illness in our lives. By acting on these evil thoughts we accumulate demerits, which eventually manifest into sufferings. We reap what we have sowed.

How do we remove these dusts in our minds to prevent our sufferings? We must definitely not act upon them. But how do we know if they have established their presence in our minds? One way to find out is to understand the emotions that they elicit. For example, the neural pathway of arrogance often elicits the emotion of anger. The neural pathway of greed elicits the emotion of temptation. These emotions are important signals that these evil thoughts exist in our minds.

God tells us not to act on our evil thoughts, by calming our minds and ponder these evil thoughts that may be causing these negative emotions. When we do not act on these evil thoughts, the neural pathway of these thoughts becomes less, and the emotions they elicit also decrease. By this process, we can eventually eliminate evil thoughts from our minds.

It is not coincidence that our souls attract people who have the same thought patterns as we do. These people act on their emotions elicited by their evil thoughts and cause suffering to us. If we do not calm our minds and ponder, we are prone to act on our emotions and cause suffering to the antagonist. This causes us to accumulate more evil thoughts, and also accumulate negative fate. The cycle of suffering will continue.

By being born again, we realize that the world is a reflection of what we have done before. Yes, the antagonists in our lives may be wrong in their actions; but they are only messengers of our souls, telling us that we have evil thoughts in our minds. We can either sweep away the evil thoughts in our minds, or we can continue the cycle of suffering by acting on our evil thoughts.

Understanding the soul uncovers why we suffer or have joy. By understanding the mechanism of the soul, it gives us the opportunity to attain joy by our own efforts.

Why do we suffer? Why are some people afflicted with cancer? Why do people suffer from diseases? Why do people get into accidents? Why do I have these intense headaches? Why am I depressed? Why do bad people appear in our lives? Why do some people appear to have joy. Are these all random events or planned by God?

God sees our ominous future by looking at what our souls have collected. God tells us that we have all sinned; and tells us we do not understand the soul:

God tells us that it is our own soul that monitors our actions by collecting and storing our merits and demerits, and it eventually releases them as joy or suffering back to us. We reap what we have sowed.

What is the soul? 

The soul has also been called the heart or the spirit. Scientists have not yet located and verified the existence of the soul in our bodies.  Some scientist believe that the soul may be composed of energies, which may make it difficult to identify and locate in our bodies.

God tells us that our souls are who we are; and our bodies are temporary dwellings borrowed from God, that our souls utilize to seek “True Joy”. Our physical bodies eventually decay, but our souls (we) continue for eternity. Our souls are like little suitcases that convey our essence from one body to another. They collect, store, and distribute energy (information) from one lifetime to another (reincarnation).

With what information does our souls enter (birth) and exit (death) our bodies?

Metaphorically, some suitcases (souls) will be described as more heavy and distorted, containing precursors (energies) of negative thoughts (see fig. 1)  and its associated ominous fates; while other souls will be described as light and symmetrical in shape, containing precursors of positive thoughts and positive fates. In summary, the soul by itself carries information of our pattern of thoughts, and our fates.

For example if we acted upon the thoughts of greed in the past, the soul will bring upon sufferings and obstacles back to us to remind us of these thoughts.  One can say that our fates are closely associated with our current neural pathways (thoughts), since it is these same thoughts that we had acted upon in the past.

God reminds us that there is no one who is essentially evil; it is only because there are paths of the mistaken mind. The mistaken mind consist of the thoughts of  greed, arrogance, regret and self-love. When we act upon these thoughts, we bring upon suffering to others.  But unknown to most people, the soul keeps account of our evil actions; and will bring upon its own justice in time. Some will call this karma or innen. What do we do when our karma catches up to us?

Most people will direct their anger, temptation or emotions elicited from these sufferings at the direct source, which could be an angry coworker, stranger, spouse, or even God. But if we understand the soul, we acknowledge that it is our own evil thoughts that elicited these negative emotions and temptations upon us. Our efforts will be directed to calm our minds, and ponder our evil thoughts; therefore not acting upon what emotions were elicited by our evil thoughts. By this process, the neural pathway of the evil thought becomes less prominent, and the emotions they elicit will also decrease. This is how we purify our minds.

Many would believe that fate delivered by the soul is not desired, but it actually helps us realize that the real source of our suffering originated from our own minds. It is these evil thoughts that elicit anger, and other emotions that tempt us to act upon any obstacles, temptations and memories that we recall.  It is our evil thoughts of greed, arrogance, regret and self-love we must continually attempt to eliminate from our minds.

What happen when we act on our evil thoughts?

When we act on our evil thoughts, more evil thoughts are created in our minds (figure 3). The neural pathways for these thought become stronger, and the emotions they elicits becomes stronger to resist. This causes us to continually act upon our evil thoughts, causing  more demerits which our soul collects. The soul eventually releases these demerits (energies) as fate (see fig. 4).   The cycle of suffering will continue until we understand the soul.

When we act on our negative thoughts (?), we cause suffering to others, and create negative energies (-) or demerits that convert to more negative thoughts  and also demerits which the soul collects and stores.

When we ponder and do not act on the emotions our negative thoughts bring upon, there are no negative thoughts created and no demerits that the soul collects. (see figure 5)

Eventually by this process of not acting on our evil thoughts when our soul manifest sufferings, we can purify both our minds and our souls; where only positive thoughts emerge from our minds, and joy flows from our souls (see figure 6).

Our positive  actions create positive energies (+). Some of these energies convert back to positive thoughts; and some are collected by the our souls as merits. These positive energies of the soul manifest into joy by the exchange of energies. The symbol ? represents good thought

 

Understanding the soul explains how causality, innen and karma function as nature’s justice. When we understand the soul, we realize that our present obstacles are the result of our own past evil actions that we do not recall (actions of past lives). We should not become angry at the messengers of our souls. Do not blame your spouse, coworker, strangers, or even God.  We must look within our minds to understand why our souls have delivered these obstacles.

God compares the digging up of a root of a tree to the process of  purifying our minds. As we must have strength and persistence in removing a long root, we must have persistence and strength not to act upon our evil thoughts when inconveniences occur in our lives. We must not be discouraged by what our souls bring forth in suffering; some of us may have longer roots (more sufferings) because we have more evil thoughts to remove from our minds. When we purify our minds (completely dig the root out), our souls will bring upon only joy. By understanding the soul, by our own efforts, we can live a joyous life.

God tells us that God is not a spectator anymore, but will begin to work to have the world understand the soul. God tells us in our sacred book:

The sick must not be left to suffer. I trust none of you would leave the sick to suffer. Those whom doctors consider to be beyond their help will merely be left to die. Saving such people is called the basis for teaching. October 17, 1893 Osashizu

The healing of the body is of primary concern when we are sick. Most of us will give up all our material wealth in order to be healthy again. It is from this perspective of health, that God will heal you from any illness if you truly understand the soul.  God grants us the blessings of healing in order to have us understand the soul, and begin the process of purifying our minds of greed, arrogance, regret and self love. By this process, we can prevent any illness or suffering in the future by our own efforts.

Understanding the Ofudesaki to spread God’s truths.

God descended from heaven to teach us how to live the joyous life. God through  Oyasama (Miki Nakayama) and the Ofudesaki (sacred book)  gives us the recipe to world salvation. These are the following ingredients: 

Understand the soul and continue to purify our minds of negative thoughts ( sin/evil ) when confronted with temptation and sufferings manifested by the soul.

To spread and share God’s truth; telling people that illness and the healing of illness may be God’s guidance to help one understand the soul/heart. This conveyance of God’s truth is called hinokishin.

To pray daily with our special prayer (Joyous Service), asking God to help people understand the soul/heart and to sweep evil from their minds. We pray for the salvation of others! This is why our prayer is so important in our faith.

To heal the people whose minds have been revealed when God guides them to us by the sazuke (saving prayer); and teach them about the soul (heart), causality and true sincerity. True sincerity is a mind that ponders over suffering and obstacles that the soul delivers, and accepts these inconveniences in a joyous manner. This will make our minds pure and spirited; and by the principle of causality will bring forth joy in the future due to the pure soul (heart).

This process of (1)understanding the soul and purifying our own minds by acting appropriately to what the soul manifest, (2) spreading the truth of the soul (hinokishin), and telling people that God will begin to work to help us understand the soul and (3) praying with the Joyous Service asking God to bring these people we have spread the truth to our places of worship, continues until all mankind is purified of evil thoughts.

GOD’S PROMISE:

All mankind will live a joyous life with everyone helping each other.

WHAT WE ASK YOU TO DO:

Please understand the soul/heart, and share with others the sacred book (Ofudesaki) that promises you a “Joyous Life”.

Questions and answers:

Am I a bad person because because I am sick or suffering?

Conventional belief in karma would say that you are suffering because you committed evil acts in the past.

Our belief (Tenrikyo) will say that everyone has God’s pure soul in them or goodness within, but have accumulated negative energies around their souls that have manifested into sufferings.  While these sufferings maybe unpleasant and sometimes unbearable, they give us opportunities to begin to remove evil thoughts from our minds if we do not act on them (see figure 6). We have control of our future to have a joyous life.

What about race and gender?

Tenrikyo would says that our souls have no color or gender. Our bodies are only borrowed from God. From the perspective of the soul, our appearance does not matter in obtaining joy.

Do I need to believe in God to have joy?

The Ofudesaki says that one just needs to understand the soul, and respond appropriately to what the soul brings forth. But if one wants to share these truths with others, believing in God may be beneficial for this purpose of God helping you to spread the truth.

I have faith in another religion; is what is written in the Ofudesaki  and my religion compatible?

Tenrikyo believes in the purification of our minds of evil thoughts (greed, arrogance, and self love). All religions will gladly accept this belief.

Tenrikyo says that we should ponder over suffering and reflect on our own minds; but what do we say or do to people that are the messengers of our souls and causing suffering to us and others?

We believe that we should not act on our evil thoughts when these sufferings are directed to us. We must avoid causing harm to others; depending on God to protect us. This is why God tells us to help spread the truth about our souls and pray, so the whole world can someday understand the soul and live the Joyous life one day sooner.

The Truth Will Set You Free

I have always encouraged others to look for the truth. Do not depend on others to relay the truth to you.  For example, in religion most of us depend on our clergy and historians to interpret and translate our sacred books.  Unfortunately, for some religions this is necessary since their sacred books were written thousands of years ago. Fortunately in the Tenrikyo religion, God is said to have descended from Heaven only a few hundred years ago and has given us our sacred scripture, the Ofudesaki.

Today I was reading verse 3-96 from the Ofudesaki. 

Kono michi wa oshii hoshii to kawai to

Yoku to koman kore ga hokori ya 3-96

These paths are miserliness, covetousness,

self-love, greed, and arrogance. They are the dusts. 3-96

For years, I have accepted the translation as written; although I wondered why miserliness is included as a dust (sin) since it is similar to greed in meaning.

The translation of oshii is also regret or disappointing. So one of the dust or path of the mistaken mind is regret, or not accepting events in our lives. This thought will certainly produce a negative emotion, which may provoke us to act negatively to any obstacles that may arise. I would presume that the following would be a more accurate translation:

These paths are regret, covetousness,

self-love, greed and arrogance. These are the dusts. 3-96

In summary, seek the meaning in our sacred books, but be wary of their translation or interpretation  by those who claim to be scholars.

The Soul Has No Color

Recently as I am getting closer to my 65th birthday, I wonder what will happen when I die. Will my mind cease to function? If I don’t have a brain, I presume that I may not be able to think.  Another question that bothers me is where was I before I was born.  Was I nothing and nonexistent?  I see a newborn baby, and I wonder where was he or she before. You may wonder what made me think about writing a blog on this subject of nothingness or immortality?

Recently I have been watching the political division in our country, with both sides accusing each other of racism, homophobia, and sexism.  In this country, most of us believe in an afterlife; and are led to believe that our bodies are permanently associated with our souls or spirits.  Some even believe that our physical bodies will be resurrected after our death, and live for eternity in heaven.  It is easy to see why many of us believe that our bodies make us who we are.

By this presumption, we are led to believe that our ancestors were black, because our skin color is black now, or because we are white now, our ancestors were white.  If one race was impugned of horrific crimes against humanity, are their offspring also responsible for their actions?  It is like the family feud of the Hatfield and McCoy, which last forever because of one family blaming the other for past sins.  It is because of this false presumption of who we are based on skin color and gender that there are racial and gender divisions that sometimes turn into anger and violence.

But suppose our bodies are only temporary dwellings borrowed from God?  It is our souls that make us who we are. Our souls are like little suitcases that take our pattern of thoughts from one lifetime to another.  Unlike the body, the soul has no color or gender; therefore we can be born of any color or gender.  If we are white now, we may have been another race in our last lifetime. Our unique bodies that have been selected for us, gives each of us the opportunity to purify our minds if we understand that every event in our lives directed at our bodies comes from our own souls. Like our height, the color of our skin should not make any difference on how we interact with others, except for those who have souls that have mistaken thoughts of greed, arrogance, and self-love.  They will use the color of our skins to divide us, and continue to cause suffering to others; and unknown to them, their own sufferings delivered by their soul.  Yes, it is the soul that delivers justice. We reap what we have sowed.  We must understand the soul!

How To Purify Our Minds

Many of us can control our anger or evil thoughts. But of course, since we are only human, sometimes we lose control and acquiesce to our evil thoughts and take action that we may regret later on. This action causes the accumulation of demerits, which the soul collects, and eventually releases as sufferings, temptations or obstacles. What we sow, we reap. How do we remove evil thoughts from our minds completely so we are not tempted to act upon them?  God tells us that we can completely remove our evil thoughts from our minds and become spirited.  How is this possible?

In the Ofudesaki, our sacred scripture, God tells us that if we understand the soul, and understand that our own souls manifest sufferings, temptations or obstacles because of our past actions, then we can calm our minds and ponder what the soul has manifested to teach us. We will then not take action upon the messengers of our souls, like our coworkers, strangers, and angry spouse. By this process of pondering and not acting on our evil thoughts, we can eliminate the neural pathway of these evil thoughts, resulting in the elimination of these thoughts completely from our minds. This will result in a pure soul, only bringing joy back to us.
