Having Faith in God

Our constitution empowers government by the people, or democracy. Individual rights matter in this type of government, over a country ruled by monarchs or selected individuals. Yet it is ironic that we the people have elected leaders who ignore the individual rights of the people. These elected leaders attempt to impose their views or beliefs on society. This is tantamount to the monarchs, and dictators that impose their powers on their people. For example our government imposes regulations on the educational system; it favors socialism where the government takes money from the middle class to take care of the poor (taxes); it favors the ecosystem at the expense of creating jobs that feed families. It takes our taxes, and gives it to foreign powers that threaten to destroy us. It appears that the power of the government increases as individual rights diminish. This is antithesis to the constitution that our founding fathers constructed.

What does the proliferation of government have to do with religion? Government, like oligarchy, or monarchies takes away the individual’s decision-making process. The individual loses the decision to be right or wrong. We tend to become stagnant becomes we know that government will take care of us. We lose the potential to grow as human beings. We lose the connection with our conscious (pure heart of God), because our decisions are made for us. The government or oligarchy takes the place of God. This is why dictators usually quash religious movements in their countries, and favor only religions that usurp individual rights.

The question arises, should we let selected individuals (government) control us; and have faith that they have our interest in hand, or should we have faith in God and our individual conscious (pure heart)?

God Created in the Image of Mankind

heaventruth's avatarOFUDESAKI-GOD'S TEACHINGS

What if God had descended from heaven, and tried to teach mankind about God’s truth, but we could not understand because of our limited knowledge, customs and prejudices. In the Book of Prophecy is the following:

Step by step, I have taught the truth of single-heartedness with God.

But you still do not understand. 2-13.

If we did understand, would there be so much violence, greed, and suffering in the world. Why do the existing sacred books condone murder, revenge, and retribution? Could this be a God created in the image of man?

In the Book of Prophecy is the following

With my children, as there number is not small,

The majority of hearts do not understand. 4-88

We must understand God from our hearts, and not from the selfish and arrogant minds of mankind. This I believe is the pure heart without arrogance, greed, or self love. We do…

Heaven’s Truth Basics

God descended from Heaven to teach why mankind was created, and has begun to help mankind live a joyous life.

There is causality. We reap what we sow.

There is reincarnation. Cause and effect may not be immediate.

We sweep evil (arrogance, greed, and self love) from our thoughts and behavior, even when our karma brings up suffering and inconvenience. This will by the law of causality, bring upon joy in the future.

Shared joy is true joy. We want others to experience our joy. We pray (Joyous Service) to help God bring others to our churches, so we teach them God’s truth of causality and our special prayer.

All mankind living a joyous life with everyone helping each other.

How to Increase Church Members

Allegories have been used to explain difficult or unfamiliar concepts throughout time. It is said that God descended in 1838 upon a rural agriculture community. To explain how the teaching of God will spread, God used terms familiar to the people, in explaining how the religion will grow.

How do we increase church membership? God compared the proselytizing of individuals to the harvesting of crops. To obtain a good harvest, weeding and fertilization are usually required. Today pesticides would also be included to accomplish a good harvest. In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), God states that weeding and fertilizing are also required to bring new members to our churches. God has given us the fertilizer. This fertilizer is a special prayer (Joyous Service) that brings people to our churches. But for this fertilizer (prayer) to be effective, we must weed our minds of evil (greed, arrogance, and self love).   When we spread the fertilizer (perform the prayer) with a sincere mind, then God will answer our prayer and bring an abundance of people to our churches. It is certainly interesting in using agriculture terminology and applying it to how to increase church membership.

Weeding our minds, and spreading the fertilizer (Joyous Service) can be said to be the main subjects in the the Book of Prophecy, which contains over 1000 verses. Yet today, many of us do not understand these special verses from God.

We Reap What We Sow

In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), there is a quote, “We see but we do not understand”. What is it that we do not understand? We do not understand the principle of causality. Good thoughts and actions result in joy; evil thoughts and actions result in sufferings. Can our suffering and joy be the result of our past actions and thoughts? Can our thoughts and actions of today bring upon an effect in our next lives? We often see the effect of our actions on others, but can they also bring upon an effect to ourselves in our next lives? What we sow, we will reap.

We see joy and suffering and we see good and evil behavior. Yet we do not understand the relationship. We do not understand that we control our own destiny by our actions of today. For those who hurt and cause sufferings to others, beware of the dangerous paths that await you in your next lives. Remove evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from your hearts today, and guarantee joy in your future lives. You control your own future! It is not God we should fear as quoted in some of the sacred books. It is our evil acts and thoughts that we should fear.

Why Church membership Does Not Increase Re-visited

Many religions have struggled to find out how to increase their followers. There are recent surveys that reveal that the majority of people do not attend a church. The increase in membership allows the church more revenue, and sometimes political and social power. Some religions have forced assimilation by intimidation and fear. Others have guaranteed salvation by the acceptance of their teachings. The history of religion sometimes reveals a dark side.

In the Heaven’s Truth Religion, there are two requirements that guarantee the increase in membership. The first requirement is that we pray. This is a special prayers asking God for the salvation of all mankind. We call this the Joyous Service. With the acceptance of our prayer, God brings people to our churches to initiate their salvation.

But the first requirement is not effective unless the second requirement takes effect. What is the second requirement? The second requirement is that we must have a mind free of greed, arrogance, and self-love. What purpose will our prayer serve if we cannot ourselves convey God’s truth when God brings people to us? In summary, it is not by our power and influence that brings new members to us, but it is God who brings them to us by determining the sincerity (purity of our minds) of our prayers. In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), it concludes with:

This talk, if the sign (Joyous Service) brings upon its effect (God’s blessing of bringing people to us), know that everything proceeds in this way. 17-74

9-11 Remembered, and Forgotten

If God told you to kill innocent people, would you? This is why having faith can be a two edge sword. Faith in God gives one hope, but it also can and has been catastrophic. Today is the anniversary of 9-11. This is when faith in God, resulted in the deaths of three thousand people. This is a date when a few young men carried out these heinous acts because they believed that God encouraged them.

Yet today, many Americans have forgotten this day of infamy. We have forgotten the heart breaking pictures of people jumping out of the twin tower buildings. Our politicians have forgotten the motives and beliefs of the leaders of where these perpetrators of the 9-11 attacks originated. The Iran Nuclear deal will give billions of our American taxpayers money to a country where their religious leaders advocate the destruction of America and Israel. Before they vote on this important legislation, would you not want to have your legislators to ask the leaders of Iran “If God told you to kill innocent people, would you kill?”

Change

How do we change people? Some religions believe in coercion, or elimination of people who do not believe in their religion. We see this in the Islam religion today. Christianity is not exempt from blame; remember the crusades of the Middle Ages, and the treatment of Native Americans by the Christian missionaries. History confirms that all these attempts to change others only resulted in suffering and more resistance.

Some believe that if we want to change people, we start from within. We need to change ourselves. We need to initially remove the evil within us to make changes in others. These evils are the removal of the dusts (thoughts) of arrogance, greed, and self love.

For example, there was a couple that was on the verge of getting a divorce. The husband went to a minister to complain about his wife. He was told to remove arrogance from his mind, and to treat his wife with kindness, even when she was argumentative. Why remove arrogance? Arrogance, or the feeling that one is right, or superior leads to anger when confronted with inconvenience. Initially, it was very difficult for the man not to have anger when his wife was confrontational. But as he gradually removed arrogance from his mind, anger and animosity disappeared that was directed toward his wife. Surprisingly, his wife began to have kindness toward him. This is a story I read from a religious pamphlet, but I believe it holds true in real life.  Positive change comes from within.
