Youki-tsutome

For those who wonder why Tenrikyo is not growing as a religion, there are many factors. We are not following the instructions in the Ofudesaki. One concern is our major prayer, the Youki-tsutome. What is it’s purpose?

Our Church Leaders tell us it is a prayer asking God to sweep our own minds, but if we look at the verses of the Ofudesaki, it is a prayer asking God to sweep the negative thoughts of others, especially the people we have spread the teachings of the soul, and pure mind. The following verses are from the Ofudesaki:

This Service (Youki-tsutome), where from to come, to think wondering.

Those in high places, spirited to come.2-4

For the pure mind, the mind spirited, ponder doing.

To God possessing, the Youki-tsutome to (perform) 4-49.

This fire and water, to distinguish to say is, this place.

The Youki-tsutome, to perform think! 6-6

From now, the mind firmly, replace.

God to hold, the Youki-tsutome to (perform). 13-10

Quickly, the minds gather, firmly,

the Service to do if so, the world to settle. 14-92

This Service, this is these working’s (guidance), beginning.

This on occasion realized, by the occurrence to exist if so. 15-29

This Service, what is it about, to think wondering.

The harvest (of new members) wanting, the (service members’) preparation. 5-52

Now today, by all means, quickly to,

the Service unless done, it won’t occur (of God’s guidance). 15-74

Quickly, the harvest (of new members) resulting in, show!

The Service only, because hastening to exist. 15-90

Throughout the world, all everyone, certainly do (the Service).

At what moment God, accompany to go out. 16-22

All assembling, quickly the Service, to do if so,

those nearby if spirited, God also to be spirited. 1-11

This Service, of what about, thinking to be.

The world settling, salvation only. 4-93

These workings, beginning to kara, the nonexistent Service,

awaiting beginning starting, certainly to settle (kara). 6-8

In summary, our prayer is not a prayer to save ourselves. God already in the Ofudesaki gives us the instructions to save ourselves by understanding our own souls. Our prayer is a prayer asking God to help us save others, especially the people we have spread God’s teachings. God then places illness as guidance to help them understand their own soul. If they understand God’s guidance, they will come to our places of worship to heal their illness. We perform the Osazuke on them, and further counsel them on the soul, to purify their minds. By this process, they should be able to purify their own minds, to save themselves. This is how the teachings are spread to the world. Unfortunately our prayer is not understood by church leaders.

Osazuke

Are we using the Osazuke as intended by God?  We are taught that we can heal anyone by performing the Osazuke. In Los Angeles, church members are performing the Osazuke after the monthly Service to anyone that wants to heal their illness.  But is this what the Ofudesaki teaches?

Personally I remember my mother going out to heal people that she was acquainted with. I would sometimes accompany her, but I never did see any miracles of healing. I remember when both my parents were dying when the Bishop performed the Osazuke. Both my parent died shortly. I remember my sister in-law when she was diagnoised with cancer, my parents prayed fervently for her recovery. She also passed away.

My question to all is, are we using the Osazuke as it was meant to be used?  In the Ofudesaki, God talks about God’s guidance of illness that will occur to help people understand their own soul, and the pure mind. It is these becoming illness from God  that we can heal with the performance of the Osazuke. The following is from the Ofudesaki:

What like, difficult to become, illness however,
of the pure mind to become, by the Osazuke to save.  6-108

What like, difficult to become, illness however,
this won’t be cured, to say nonexistent.   12-51
Let summarize when the Osazuke should be performed.
  1. first we purify our minds by understanding the fates that come from our own soul.
  2. then we spread the teachings of the soul, pure mind, and God’s guidance that will appear to help one understand the soul.
  3. We perform  the Youki-tsutome asking God to help these people.
  4. God places illness as guidance to these people we have spread the teachings.
  5. If they understand God’s guidance, they come to our places of worship to be healed.
  6. We perform the Osazuke, and further teach them about the soul and pure mind.
  7. They are healed, and able to purify their minds by themselves by understanding the  Soul.
  8. These are the steps to spread the teachings to the world.
In summary, I believe that the osazuke does not cure existing illness. It only cures illness given by God as guidance. It is one of the steps that is required in the spreading of God’s teachings. This is why our prayers to heal existing illness are not working, and why God’s teachings are not spreading to the world. We must understand the Ofudesaki to spread God’s teachings to the world.

dono youna mutsukashiki naru yamai demo
Shinjitsu naru no iki de tasukeru. 6-108
Dono youna mutsukashiku naru yamai demo
kore naoran to yuu de nai zo ya  12-51
Osazuke

Why no new translation?

Many people in Tenrikyo believe that the Ofudesaki is the most sacred scripture of our faith. Many also believe that its words come directly from God.

Because I live in the United States, I have access to the English translation published by Tenrikyo Church Headquarters. However, this English translation is almost identical to the one published in 1971.

Despite the fact that the Ofudesaki is the most important scripture in Tenrikyo, why is this the case? Why has it not been translated faithfully, word by word and verse by verse?

I have translated the Ofudesaki into English word for word and verse by verse. To my surprise, I discovered that many of God’s teachings have not been accurately translated.

It is also surprising that, although there are said to be translation committees and Ofudesaki study groups in America, the translation itself has remained unchanged. My literal English translation does not match the Church’s interpretation. Why is this so?

I ask everyone to attempt translating the Ofudesaki word for word and verse by verse themselves, and then evaluate whether the Church’s translation matches their own.

If you are pressed for time and unable to do this, you may purchase a word-for-word English translation on Amazon. The book is titled Tenrikyo by Miki Nakayama (the red book). I am not making any profit from this book, as it is sold at the minimum possible cost.

I sincerely believe that God’s teachings are not spreading to the world because we do not truly understand the contents of the Ofudesaki, due to the fact that Church leaders are interpreting this sacred scripture rather than translating it.

In my next posts, I will discuss some of the topics that are being interpreted instead of translated.

illness as God’s guidance to ponder

Starting the new year with the same verse I ended 2025. I feel this verse is important to understand, as it’s translation is completely different from Church Headquarter’s interpretation.

Alternative translation

God is asking people to discern God’s guidance of illness that appears on one’s body, and ponder one’s own mind for negative thoughts. By this process, one can purify one’s own mind.

Primary message of God

The purpose of a church is to spread God’s teachings. If we can agree on this, then we must ask an important question: what is the message that the Tenrikyo Church is meant to share with the world?

Is it the Service of the Yorozuyo and the Twelve Dances, the daily Service, the healing prayer of the Osazuke, following the footsteps of Oyasama, or making pilgrimages to Ojiba to express gratitude to God? These are all meaningful and sacred practices. However, they are not the core message itself; they are supports for it. So what, then, is the primary message?

In the very first verse of Tenrikyo’s most sacred scripture, the Ofudesaki, God tells us that we do not understand the mune. What is the mune? It is our own soul—something we fail to truly understand. If everyone in the world understood their own soul, would peace and prosperity not naturally follow? To answer this, we must look at what the Ofudesaki teaches about the soul.

God teaches us to reflect on what arises from our own soul. Our fates are created by acting upon our thoughts. The soul itself observes our conduct and brings about justice accordingly. We reap what we sow. God further teaches that when suffering appears from the soul as a result of past actions, if we refrain from acting on negative thoughts, we can gradually purify our minds. When the mind becomes pure, only health and happiness will emerge from the soul.

In summary, the first teaching that must be spread to the world is the teaching of the soul itself. The prayers, services, and practices that church leaders emphasize are means to convey the teachings of the soul and the pure mind. Without first introducing people to an understanding of their own soul, these practices lose their effectiveness, and our efforts and prayers cannot bear their full fruit of helping people understand their own soul.

We do not understand God

Tenrikyo Church Headquarter translate mune as God’s heart. What is God’s heart? Could this interpretation be correct? We do not understand God’s heart? Let’s make sure, as God tells us in the first verse of the most sacred scripture. Could mune be our soul? The following is from the Ofudesaki using both God’s heart and soul where mune is written:

Of all generations, the world everyone, looking at.
Of God’s heart understood, a person is nonexistent because, 1-1

Of all generations, the world everyone, looking at.

DO WE HAVE ENOUGH FAITH?

It is interesting that many Tenrikyo people will take the flu vaccine or even the Covid vaccine. There are many Tenrikyo people on hypertension, heart, or diabetic medications. It is common that we visit physicians and hospital for any medical conditions that afflict our bodies.

But what does the Ofudesaki say about doctors and medicine? About the cholera epidemic in Japan, God tells us the illness is from God’s guidance. On the illness of Shuji, God tells us that doctors and medicine will not cure the illness.

So if we do not use doctors and medicine, what do we do?  God tells us to ponder our minds for negative thoughts, and remove these thoughts from the mind. God tells us when the mind is pure, only joy and health will appear from our own souls.

But how many of us have the faith to depend on the truths that are written in the Ofudesaki?
