Tenrikyo /The Truth Will Set You Free

What if God gave us the truth? Would this make our lives better? Some believe that they have the truths in their religions; but it is not making their lives better. Of course, what is the definition of better? In reality, the truth like everything that is good in life, is free. Man cannot get a profit from what is free. Some say that you get what you pay for; so they say anything free is not worth much including the words in our sacred books. The truths in the sacred books are free for anyone to peruse, or study intently. But these truths serve no purpose, unless they are utilized and spread. For example, if someone gives you a car; it serves no purpose to keep it in the garage; one has to use it to travel from one point to another. We must use the truths in the sacred books by applying them to events in our lives.

In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), it is said that the path of salvation and happiness is a difficult path. One’s intent to follow it may not be enough to get one through. Short translation is that one may have the truth, but may not utilize it. But what is this truth that we may have, but fail to utilize or follow? What is this truth that God shows us daily? I believe this truth is about causality, karma, or innen. God is showing us what we have done before. You can also say that God is giving us guidance. That headache or palpation of the heart may be God’s guidance to remove greed, arrogance, and self-love from your thoughts and actions. The truths that appear daily, we must not brush aside; we must ponder and act positively to these inconveniences. For example, sometimes it is difficult and almost impossible to bear when someone we once loved turns away from us. It is difficult not to react negatively. But if we can react positively under these stressful and sad conditions, it creates a positive future. The truth will set you free.
