God tells us in the Ofudesaki that there is no discrimination in what happens to us. Church followers and church leaders alike are held accountable for their actions. Many people may believe that because they are followers, God will be more lenient toward their mistakes and negative behaviors, and that God will simply forgive them. But according to the Ofudesaki, this is not the case.

Throughout the history of our religion, even our leaders have suffered and some have passed away earlier than expected. Examples include Kokan and Shuji, the children of Oyasama. At times, it may even appear that followers suffer more. How can this happen? Is God punishing us?

The Ofudesaki tells us to understand our own soul, especially what comes from it. It is our own soul that collects the negative fates created when we act upon our negative thoughts. The soul stores these fates, and when the right opportunity arises, they eventually manifest back to us as suffering. That opportunity may not arise until a future life.

In this sense, our own soul monitors our actions and brings back the consequences of what we have done. We reap what we have sown through our own soul. In these instances, God is not punishing us; God is a spectator to the consequences that come from our own soul.

However, because God saw the suffering that human beings were experiencing, God descended from heaven to teach us how to live the Joyous Life—the life that was intended when human beings were created.

To accomplish this, God first began preparing the early followers so that they could spread these teachings throughout the world. God began the process of purifying their minds by placing illness upon them as guidance, preparing them for a special service, the Youki-tsutome, which would eventually help purify the minds of people throughout the world.

What does this Service do, and how does it help spread the teachings?

First, God tells the early followers to purify their own minds by understanding the fates that appear from their own souls. Then God tells them to spread the truth about the soul, the pure mind, and God’s guidance to other people.

But God knows how difficult it can be for people to understand new information. Therefore, God granted the followers the Youki-tsutome, a special prayer intended to help people understand these teachings.

When this special prayer is performed, God places illness as guidance upon the people who have been taught about the soul and the pure mind. The illness is placed according to the amount and kind of negative thoughts in their minds—thoughts that they are likely to act upon in the future. If they act upon these thoughts, they will create negative fates that their souls will collect, store, and eventually manifest.

Through these guidances, God is showing people what their future may be if they do not remove their negative thoughts.

If they understand God’s guidance, they will come to our places to be healed through the Osazuke and to receive further instruction on how to purify their own minds. In this way, the teachings are spread throughout the world.

In summary, suffering can arise in two ways. It can arise from the fates stored within our own souls, or it can occur through God’s guidance to help us understand our own souls and the negative thoughts within our minds.

Both may involve temporary suffering. But when that suffering is properly understood, it can lead us toward the Joyous Life—the life that God intended when human beings were created.

神様はおふでさきで、私たちに起こることには、何の差別もないと教えています。教会の信者であっても、教会の指導者であっても、その行いについて責任を問われます。私たちは信者なのだから、間違いや悪い行いについて神様は大目に見てくださり、許してくださるだろう、と考える人も多いかもしれません。しかし、おふでさきによれば、そうではありません。

私たちの宗教の歴史を見ても、指導者たちでさえ苦しみ、また、予想より早く亡くなった人たちがいます。その例として、おやさまのお子様である孝子（こうかん）や秀司（しゅうじ）がいます。時には、信者のほうがもっと苦しんでいるようにさえ見えることがあります。これはどうして起こるのでしょうか。神様が私たちを罰しているのでしょうか。

おふでさきは、私たち自身の魂を理解するように、そして特に、その魂から何が出てくるのかを理解するように教えています。私たちが自分の心の中にある悪い思いに従って行動することによって、悪い因縁が生まれます。そして、その因縁を私たち自身の魂が集め、蓄えていきます。そして、適切な機会が来ると、その因縁が私たちの苦しみとして現れます。その機会は、次の人生まで来ないこともあります。

この意味で、私たち自身の魂が自分の行いを見守り、自分がしたことの結果を自分に返しているのです。私たちは、自分自身の魂を通して、自分が蒔いたものを自分で刈り取ります。このような場合、神様が私たちを罰しているのではありません。神様は、私たち自身の魂から生じる結果を見ておられるのです。

しかし、神様は人間が苦しんでいるのを見られたので、天からこの世に現れ、人間がどのように生きればよいのかを教え始められました。それが、陽気な人生です。それは、人間が創造された時に神様が意図された生き方です。

そのために、神様はまず初めの信者たちを準備し始められました。それは、彼らがこの教えを世界中に広めることができるようにするためです。神様は、病気を手引きとして置くことによって、彼らの心を浄める準備を始められました。そして、世界中の人々の心を浄めることになる特別なつとめ、陽気つとめのために、彼らを準備されたのです。

では、このつとめは何をするのでしょうか。そして、どのようにして教えを世界に広めるのでしょうか。

まず、神様は初めの信者たちに、自分自身の魂から現れてくる因縁を理解することによって、自分の心を浄めるように教えられました。そして、その後、魂、純粋な心、そして神様の手引きについての真理を、他の人々に伝えるように教えられました。

しかし神様は、人間にとって新しい情報を理解することが、どれほど難しいかをご存じです。そこで神様は、教えを人々が理解することを助けるために、特別な祈りである陽気つとめを信者たちに与えられました。

この特別な祈りが行われると、神様は、魂と純粋な心について教えを受けた人々に、手引きとして病気を置かれます。その病気は、その人の心の中にある悪い思いの量や種類に応じて置かれます。それは、その人が将来、実際に行動に移す可能性のある悪い思いです。

もしその悪い思いに従って行動すれば、その人は悪い因縁を作ることになります。そして、その因縁を魂が集め、蓄え、やがて将来に現すことになります。

神様は、この手引きを通して、もし人が自分の悪い思いを取り除かなければ、将来どのような結果になるのかを示しておられるのです。

もしその人が神様の手引きを理解すれば、御守護を受けるために、また自分自身の心を浄めるためのさらなる教えを受けるために、私たちのところへ来るようになります。そして、おさづけによって神様の手引きである病気を治していただきます。このようにして、教えが世界中に広がっていくのです。

まとめると、苦しみは二つの形で起こることがあります。一つは、私たち自身の魂に蓄えられた因縁から生じる苦しみです。もう一つは、私たち自身の魂と、心の中にある悪い思いを理解するための、神様の手引きとして起こる苦しみです。

どちらも、一時的な苦しみを伴うことがあります。しかし、その苦しみを正しく理解することができれば、それは陽気な人生へと私たちを導くことができます。それこそが、人間が創造された時に神様が意図された人生なのです。
