I will call this diagram the cycle of suffering. This is why God tells us in the first verse of the Ofudesaki and the Yorozuyo that we do not understand the heart (mune) that resides in each of us.
THE CYCLE OF SUFFERING
OFUDESAKI 7-49
The mind gets purified by eliminating the dusts of regret, covetousness, self-love, greed, and arrogance. When this happens our minds become spirited. This is what God wants for everyone.
OFUDESAKI 7-48
Because God wants everyone to be saved (see previous verse), God’s mind hastens to purify everyone’s mind. Remember the spirited mind is a purified mind. God is asking asking why our minds are depressed or not purified.
OFUDESAKI 7-47
When the mind is pure, any kind of blessings God promises. God truly wants to save everyone.
OFUDESAKI 7-46
When the mind is pure, one has access to God. Again these dusts we need to remove are regret, covetousness, self-love, arrogance, and greed.
The Broad and Narrow Path
In the Ofudesaki, God talks about the broad and narrow paths. On the diagram the black line in the middle separates these two paths. The broad path is the path of the heart, where one can purify one’s mind, if one does not act upon the dusts or evil thoughts in one’s mind when negative fate appears from one’s heart. God also compares this to the digging of a root to attain the original pure mind (Ofudesaki 5-65 and 5-66). As most of us know, to dig out a root is very difficult, so one can imagine the broad path is a difficult path to complete. But once this path is completed, one attains the “Joyous life” and is spirited. I believe this is the path that God wants everyone to complete. When the world completes this path, the heavenly dew will flow from heaven upon the Kanrodai, bringing upon heaven on earth.
How do we get to where everyone in the world has completed the broad path and has a pure mind? For some people, after attaining the Joyous life, they would like to share this life with others. This is the narrow path (right of the black line on the diagram), where God guarantees that a “ rich harvest” of new members will be achievable. The narrow path is not for everyone. In the Ofudesaki, God tells us only a limited amount of people will be responsible for spreading the teachings.
Yogi demo chotto no koto dewa nai karani
goju rokuju no ninkazu ga hoshi 7-23
Timbers, a small amount it is not.
50 to 60 in number I want.
kono nin mo itsuitsu made mo heran yo
matsudai tsuzuki kireme naki yo. 7-24
These numbers, forever not to decrease.
Forever to continue, without and end.
It is my opinion that these 50 or 60 individuals that will be responsible for the spreading of the teachings to the world. The others yobokus or missionaries unders them, will assist them in their mission. So it appears that God does not expect everyone to become yobokus or missionaries in spreading God’s truths. For those who expect everyone in the world to be performing the Joyous Service, Yorozuyo, and the twelve songs, it is probably not realistic, and is not what God wants. God only wants everyone in the world to complete the broad path to purify their minds.
Summary of Ofudesaki
In the Mikagura-uta and the Ofudesaki, God uses analogies to make the teachings easier to understand. Most of the early followers were farmers working in the fields. God uses terms like weeding, water, fertilizer, and harvest in explaining the teachings. Yes some may argue that by following the teachings, their harvest of crops were increased; but I believe that God is talking about how to save the world. I have constructed a diagram summarizing both the Ofudesaki and the mikagura-uta. Tomorrow, if you bear with me, I will use this diagram to explain another topic.

OFUDESAKI 7-45
God is telling the early followers that the blessings of guidance were not seen before. But they will begin to see these blessings in the future.
OFUDESAKI 7-44
God again like in the first verse of the most sacred scripture tells the early followers that they do not understand the heart. I believe it is the same today that most people do not understand what the heart is.
OFUDESAKI 7-43
If we purify our minds, our prayer (Joyous Service) will be answered by God. These blessings of new members to our places of worship will be provided by God. Remember God wants to save everyone in the world.
