In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), we are told that if we have anger, we do not know God’s teachings. But how do we remove greed, arrogance, and self-love from our minds? Anger, I believe comes from our arrogance. We believe that we are correct, and others are not. In my life, anger appears to arise at work, at home, and especially when I am driving. How often do you get to urge to stare a driver down when you pass him or her when you think they are not driving correctly; or how often have you seen an inappropriate finger directed to you. This is anger that is derived from arrogance.
In our religion, we are told to sweep the dust of arrogance from our thoughts. But this endeavor is a difficult task as I have found out. It is easy path to follow when the days go by without difficulties or inconveniences; but when inconveniences appear, thoughts of anger easily emerge. How do we then prevent anger from emerging? How do we remove arrogance from our minds?
We must admit that we have arrogance in our minds. When this mindset of arrogance manifests anger, we must be careful not to take any negative actions, or show our anger. We must ponder, and acknowledge that we as human beings are not always perfect. We must realize that people make mistakes, and sometimes their actions may not appear right to us. If we do not react negatively, then I believe that arrogance will gradually disappear from our minds. It is like any neural pathway. If we continue the pathway to anger by showing it or responding negatively, arrogance in our minds will continue to increase; but if we block the pathway of anger by pondering and settling the mind, then arrogance will decrease. In the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki), God tells us that this is a difficult path to follow; but God also tells us to lean on him, and he will help you to remove arrogance, greed and self love from your minds.
