To the Tenrikyo people, are you nihon or kara? This is an important question? Do you believe in God’s teaching or not? For most Tenrikyo people, you may consider this a silly question. Of course you would say that you believe in the teachings. But do you?

In the Ofudesaki, God tells us there are two types of people. One that believes in God’s teachings (nihon), and the others that do not (kara). What are these teachings that God wants us to know? The first is the soul. God wants us to understand our own soul. The second is the pure mind that God wants us to attain by understanding the fates that come from our soul. God tells us when our minds are pure, only health and happiness will appear from our own souls. Do you believe in this? If you do not, you may be a good person, but you are kara in God’s eyes.

God tells us that when our minds are pure, we can be a vehicle to spread God’s truth to others. To do this we must believe in the soul and pure minds ourselves. Then we must spread the teaching to others (kara) that do not understand the teachings. God has also given us a special prayer to perform that will help others understand the soul and pure mind. This is the Youki-tsutome, a simple prayer. By the acceptance of our prayer, God places illness as guidance to the people we have spread the teachings depending on the negative thoughts in their minds. These are the thoughts they will act upon that creates their negative fates, that their own soul collects, stores, and eventually manifest as suffering back to them. God by these illness is showing them their future if they do not remove their negative thoughts.

These people who understand God’s guidance are considered to be nihon now, as God will guide them to purify their minds. They will come to our places of worship to be healed by another special prayer, the osazuke that heals Illness given by God. We also will inform them again of the soul, and pure mind, so they can purify their minds by themselves. This is how God’s teaching are spread to the world.

Again, we in Tenrikyo must become nihon, for our religion to spread the teaching to the world, that God considers to be mainly kara now.
