Free will

When I was a child, every bad thing I did, my mom would say that I would receive a bachi from God. Bachi was a punishment from God. I was scared of the consequences of my acts. It did not make me a better person; but it prevented me from getting into trouble. Today, I wonder where the bachis are. Why doesn’t God punish these evil people that cause suffering to others?

I believe the answer lies in free will. God has given us a mind to use our free will. If God punished us for our evils, then where is our free will? Fear prevents us from using our free will. Fear prevents us from revealing our true minds. Fear prevents the maturation of our minds. We regress to our animal instincts of survival.

There are some in the world that believe that they act in behalf of God. They force or coerce others, essentially treating people like animals. They prevent the maturation of the human soul, antithesis to God’s principles. We must have free will to find out for ourselves the truth of heaven. This is why God does not act directly on the evils of the earth. This is why God is said to be a spectator, waiting for the world to understand the principles of causality and reincarnation. We see what is happening in the world today, and we see the actions of mankind; but we do not understand the relationship.

God as the Moon-Sun

How does God communicate with us? In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), God tells us that the anger and regret of God is manifested by severe weather and geological disturbances.

In this world, landslides, thunder, earthquakes,

And great winds are all from the anger of God. 6-91

If one is a believer in the bible, the story of Noah also will confirm this. But how does God create these disturbances? In the Book of Prophecy, God refers to himself as God, the Moon-Sun, and the Parent. Is it coincidence that that God refers to himself as Moon-Sun beginning in Chapter 6 of the Book of Prophecy? This is the same chapter that he warns us that these weather and geological disturbances are a result of God’s anger and regret (verse 6-91 above).

By scientific data, we know that the moon and the sun can affect the weather and geological patterns of the earth. Does God use the moon and sun in showing us his anger or regret in mankind? Can these natural disasters be the result not of global warming, but as a result of man’s evil behavior?

Fighting Depression

Someone once said that if life becomes depressing, one should reflect deep within to find out what is causing this depression. This is where the psychologist and psychiatrist perform their miracles in treating depression. There is another theory that tells the individual to look beyond oneself in finding joy. This means thinking about helping others to find joy. This makes sense in that by thinking about our own concerns, we are likely to become depressed when events go contrary to our expectations. Some would say that depression is a selfish disease.

In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki) is the following:

If you are a mind to save others single-heartedly,

I shall firmly accept you, even if you say nothing. 3-38

If all the world comes to help one another,

God will accept all your minds. 13-38

When we look beyond our selfish concerns, our hearts become one with God, and inevitably we become spirited like God.

Killing God

What or who is God? Does God exist? Is he a source of positive energy? These are the questions that man has asked ever since the beginning of thought. There is a quote from the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), which may answer this question.

I shall teach you step by step that this world is

the body of God. Ponder over it. 3-40

By deductive reasoning, if the world is the body of God, our bodies are part of God. And God lends us our bodies. Verse 3-41 confirms this:

All human bodies are things lent by God.

What thoughts are you using them? 3-41

Today, there are people who believe they represent God, and are causing sufferings to those who do not share or agree with their faith. How do you think God feels when they are hurting the bodies that God has lent someone? Since we are part of God, they are causing suffering to God. For those who believe you are killing in behalf of your God, you are killing God! Ponder over it.

For those, who wonder why God does not help us eliminate these evil people, remember these evil people are part of God. God definitely does not want to destroy himself. Find out in my next blog, how God may destroy evil.

This World is the Body of God

Why does God want to help mankind that he has created? There is a quote from the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), which I feel is very profound.

I shall teach you step by step that this world is

the body of God. Ponder over it. 3-40

By deductive reasoning, if the world is the body of God, our bodies are part of God. Verse 3-41 confirms this:

All human bodies are things lent by God.

What thoughts are you using them? 3-41

By the law of causality, if we are using our minds to do bad things, the body suffers or is inconvenienced in the future. If we are part of God, then God is also said to be suffering because of our behavior. In the Book of prophecy, this suffering of God is called the regret of God.

The regret of God until now has accumulated

And is piled mountainously high. 7-61

How do we remove the regret or suffering of God? We must use our minds to do good by helping others. When the minds of the world become purified without greed, arrogance, and self love, human beings will bring upon a world that is prosperous and spirited due to the effects of causality; and God will become spirited and healthy because the world, which makes up God is healthy and prosperous.

An analogy would be like our bodies. We are made up of many organs. All these organs must function together for the body to be healthy. But if one organ becomes diseased, then the whole body may become ill. For God to become spirited and whole, all of his children, like the organs of the body must become healthy. We must purify our minds of evil.

But looking at the wars and conflicts of the world today, how would this task of purifying all the minds of the world become possible? Many will say it will be impossible; but in the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), it is said that God has given us a special prayer (Joyous Service). With the acceptance of this prayer, God will help the world sweep the evils from all mankind. This is unlike any prayer. It is not a prayer that praises God or a prophet. It is not a selfish prayer; but it is a prayer asking for the salvation of others. It is a prayer to save all mankind. When mankind is spirited, then God will become whole and spirited.

The Prayer to Save all mankind

There are people that believe that they are working through God. We see this everyday in missionaries that try to help others, and attempt to be role models for their religions. But there are also people that believe that God works through them; but they force their religion on others, even at the expense of human life. This appears to be an oxymoron to religion.

In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), we do not force religion on others; but we have a special prayer asking God to help sweep the evils (greed, arrogance, and self love) from the minds of the world. It is told that when we pray with true sincerity that God will bring others to us. As more people purify their hearts, this prayer will resonate throughout the world. Eventually all mankind will be purified from their innermost hearts, and the world will experience true joy.

Does God punish the evil?

In the Tip of the Writing Brush (Ofudesaki) is the verse.

The world is saying that it is cholera,

but it is God informing you of his regret. 14-23

Can God be warning us about our wrong use of our mind? Can illness and disorders of our bodies be the result of God’s guidance and love for his children? It is said that God sees the dangerous paths of suffering if we continue to harbor greed, arrogance and self-love in our minds. These dangerous paths of today may result in suffering in the future. This is the concept of causality, where good thoughts and behavior result in joy, and evil thoughts and behavior result in suffering in the future. If one believes in reincarnation, the suffering or joy appears in the next lives. God by working to give us guidance (illness) today is giving us an opportunity to have joy in our next lives.

There are many people that would say that God punishes us by placing illness and disorders upon our bodies. Many of us would also want the evil to suffer God’s wrath today. But as we know, evil people many times do not suffer from disease or disorders. Could it be that disease or disorders are placed on good people to help them purify their minds of evil? In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), we believe that with our special prayer, God enter into people, and distinguishes their minds; and places illness on their bodies dependent on how they are using their minds. When these people ponder on their illness, and remove greed and arrogance from their minds, the illness is removed. In the long term, by removing evil today, one opens a path of joy in the next life.

Today, we see an outbreak of Ebola, and other viral diseases that appear to jeopardize our health. Some would say that they are God’s punishment for our sins. Others would say that God is absent; but could they be like the cholera epidemics in the past that is mentioned in the sacred book? Could they be God’s guidance in purifying our minds? Ponder over your illness and reflect how you have been using your mind!

The difficult path to salvation

In our sacred book, God says that the path of salvation is a difficult path. I often had to go over these passages, hoping that I was translating these verses incorrectly. Why is this path so difficult?

In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following:

This is a world constructed on reason

So I shall press upon you everything with the reason in verse. 1-21

It takes effort and time to understand what is happening in the world; and sometimes we find the answers lie within ourselves and we find out that we are at fault. This is difficult to accept. For many it is easier to blame others for the problems in their lives. The conflict in the Middle East, and also the racial conflicts in Missouri are good examples of blaming the other side.

It is sometimes easier to follow a doctrine, dictator, or even a political organization without questioning the truth. We take a leap of faith, and continue to follow it even to our detriment. We become like the trillion of ants that roam the earth serving only the queen, to populate the earth with more ants. Many times, the essence or meaning of the entity gets lost or corrupted; and only the importance of increasing membership becomes paramount. The increase in membership proves the justification of their group. It is often the poor and the uneducated that are recruited into these organizations. They place their faith and sometimes their lives in a religion, or group because it is easier to comply, and it is easier to blame others. Just because a group is increasing, it does not make what they represent correct. We must not be like ants.

God’s Special Prayer Revised

Why do most of our prayers fail? We hear of people who pray and they are given miraculous healings; but this is only a small minority. Statistically a small percentage will recover from a terminal illness. These miracles may not be the result of our prayer. Then why pray at all?

In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), there are two things that must occur before our prayers our answered by God. We must be on the same frequency or mindset as God. This is a mind that is void of greed, arrogance, and self love. The second criteria is that the purpose of the prayer (intention) must coincide with God’s original purpose for the creation of mankind. In the Tip of the Writing Brush, it is stated that God created all mankind to live the joyous life.

We have a special prayer called the “Joyous Service” asking God to help others. It is this prayer that when we perform it without greed, arrogance, and self love, that God answers. God brings people to us so we can teach them this special prayer so that they can also pray for others. By the propagations of this service, it is foretold that eventually all mankind will live the joyous life.

This prayer unlike other religious prayer is not to acknowledge and glorify God, or a prophet. It is not about a master servant relationship, but more like a parent child relationship. We are asking God to help others. There is a true purpose in the Joyous Service. The Joyous Service becomes a means to communicate with God our desire for a joyous life for all mankind.
