Why do we suffer?

Why do we suffer? Suffering does not discriminate. Rich people, poor people, religious people, nonreligious people, good people, evil people, famous people, powerful people all suffer. The suffering of a child is very difficult to bear. Ever since the beginning of the conscious mind, man has wondered why we suffer. In the Bible, the righteous man Job even questioned God on why he suffered when he was a good man.

Does suffering have a purpose? Is there a cause relationship of suffering? Some would say that suffering is a result of our past sins.  It is our punishment for our evil thoughts and behavior.  But what about the innocent child who suffers? Some will say it is the result of his or her previous lives.

But does suffering have to be explained as a punishment?  Maybe like the recycling of oxygen and carbon dioxide to maintain life on earth, it is part of the process to purify our minds. Good thoughts and behavior results in joy, and evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) thoughts and behavior result in suffering. God is only a spectator.  We sow what we plant. The individual controls his or her own destiny by his or her actions and thoughts. By understanding this concept of causality, one can purify the mind.

What parent would want their child to suffer? It is the same with God. God does not want his children to suffer. God can only look on as humans treat each other with disrespect.  We must remind our selves that because suffering exist, joy must also exist. We must use our minds to create joy.

The truth of Heaven

The truth of heaven is CAUSALITY. The law of causality is difficult for people to accept. The law of causality states that good thoughts and behaviors set forth a joyous future, and evil thoughts and behaviors set forth sufferings in the future. Without understanding this concept, we are like the compulsive gambler who refuses to believe he or she has an addiction.  We are at loss when suffering happens to our love ones or to us. More often when sufferings occur, we take part in behavior that causes more suffering.  We scoff at the idea that these inconveniences are the result from our past sins.  We deny our faults. We do not want to admit that our loved ones or we have sinned or have behaved with malice in past lives.  We have a difficulty accepting this self-regulating concept of purifying our minds. We adamantly refuse to believe that we are at fault.

But like the gambler or the alcoholic, we must face our problems. We must admit that we have sinned.  We must accept the law of causality as a self-regulating process of purifying the minds. Understanding causality puts the onus on oneself, instead of blaming others for one’s sufferings. We are not perfect, but we can be perfect by understanding and applying the principles of causality. Causality gives us an opportunity to create a joyous life. It is a simple principle; be good, and you will have joy. Causality is not pessimistic and sinister; it is opportunistic, and good. Sweep evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from your minds.  Causality is the truth of God that will eventually bring peace to all mankind, and a joy that will last for eternity with everyone helping and caring for each other. Causality gives everyone a opportunity for joy.

We need to pray

Sometimes I wonder why there are not so many people that view my website, and become interested in religion.  I attempt to write interesting blogs to attract potential viewers that may help propagate the teachings; yet progress appears to be very slow. In the Osashizu, there is a quote concerning a coming anniversary. It states that the promised time has not yet appeared despite the dedication of the followers. Why has not the promised time come?

Many times we think that we can help people see the truth of our religion. We believe the truth will set them free. But people have a difficulty in understanding the truth. We need God’s help. In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following:

Since the path now is covered with dust, take up God, and do the sweeping. 3-145

There after, the path will be wide and without dust. Take along with you as many others as you wish. 3-146

We need God’s help in bringing in people to religion. Also the following from the Tip of the Writing Brush:

This Prayer, from where do you think they will come from?

From the high places they will come spiritedly. 2-4

Prayer will bring people to religion. But what is this prayer that God is talking about? I believe that the prayer is the Joyous Service. This is the simple service asking God to sweep away the evils (greed, arrogance, and self love) in our hearts.

But unfortunately in religion, more emphasis is placed on ceremonies and rituals of the past. I believe that this is why God’s truth has not spread like God has promised in our sacred books.  It is God who will bring understanding to the people.  We need to pray daily!

Comparing Religions

What makes our religion different from other religions?  Let us today compare Buddhism to our religion. Both religions accept that there is much suffering on this earth. Buddhism believes in repressing things that cause suffering by meditation, avoidance of things that cause suffering, while Tenrikyo believes in sweeping the things (greed, arrogance and self love) that cause suffering, We ask God in our prayers daily to help us sweep these evils from our minds.

Buddhism believes in avoiding the things that may cause suffering like possessions, power, and authority. Buddhism believes in the suppression of anger by avoidance, and meditation. For example, in one episode some shepherds had lost some sheep and were inquiring the monks if they had seen them. Buddha told the monks that they were lucky not to have possessions like the sheep so they did not have to worry about losing what they think is theirs.

Tenrikyo believes that possession do no cause sufferings. It is the greed that is associated with these possessions that we must sweep away. God provides us with many resources in attaining our physical goals.

Tenrikyo believes that anger is to be avoided, but not by suppression or avoidances of what causes anger. It teaches that one’s arrogance causes anger. We believe in the elimination of our arrogance to prevent anger from arising. We should not barricade ourselves from society.

Tenrikyo is a positive religion that encourages us to utilize our abilities and the riches of the earth that God has provided. It encourages us to work together by helping each other in creating this joyous world.

Causality as the Truth of God

It is human nature to deny that one is at fault. For example, it is difficult for an alcoholic or gambler to admit their addictions. Many will agree that without their admission of a problem, they will continue to drink and gamble.

The law of causality is also difficult for people to accept. More often when sufferings occur, we scoff at the idea that they result from our past sins.  We deny our faults. We do not want to admit that our loved ones or we have sinned or have behaved poorly in past lives.

The Truth of Heaven

It is human nature to deny that one is at fault. For example, it is difficult for an alcoholic or gambler to admit their compulsions. Many will agree that without their admission of a problem, they will continue to regress.

The law of causality is also difficult for people to accept. The law of causality states that good thoughts and behaviors set forth a joyous future, and evil thoughts and behaviors set forth sufferings in the future. When sufferings occur, we scoff at the idea that they result from our past sins.  We deny our faults. We do not want to admit that our loved ones or we have sinned or have behaved poorly in past lives.  We have a difficulty accepting this self-regulating concept of purifying our minds. We are not at fault for our sufferings.

But like the gambler or the alcoholic, we must face our tormenters. We must admit that we have sinned.  We must accept the law of causality as a self-regulating process of purifying the minds. Understanding causality puts the onus on us, instead of blaming others for our sufferings. We are not perfect, but we can be perfect by understanding and applying the principles of causality. Causality gives us an opportunity to create a joyous life. It is a simple philosophy; be good, and you will have joy.

Seek the Truth

Some one once asked, how do I know how much I have progressed spiritually? Oyasama was quoted as saying “ If you have anger, you do not know the teachings of God. If you understand God’s truth, anger should not arise.

The emotion of anger, like the thoughts of greed, arrogance, and self love sets forth the motion of suffering in the future. Unlike the other evils (greed, arrogance, and self love) that permeate the mind, anger is easy to detect.  The increased palpation of the heart, the lump in the throat, and the irrational mind are all signs of anger. The detection of anger gives notice that one may not be pure in mind.  If you have anger, continue to seek for God’s truth in obtaining purity of mind. Seek the truth!

The Body of God is in Poor Health

One may propose when God created the world, he envisioned a world of joy of people helping each other; not a world where people would take advantage others to enjoy life. In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following verse:

I shall teach you step by step that this world is the body of God.  Ponder, and look at it. 3-40

This verse states that everything including human beings is all parts of God. For God to be healthy or whole, the world must function together.  For God to be healthy, even the evil must be converted to good. How do the evil become good?  In the Tip of the Writing Brush is the following verse:

This prayer, who do you think it is intended for?  From the high places they will come spiritedly. 2-4

Our prayer helps mankind sweep evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from their minds.  When all mankind is purified from the innermost heart, then the world will prosper and have everlasting peace. It is prayer that will restore God’s body to health.

Causality as God’s Guidance

The following are two verses from the Tip of the Writing Brush concerning causality.

Until now, no matter what path you may have been on,

I kept still because the day had not yet come. 6-24

There can be no help for what you have done self-centeredly.

I can only look on caringly.16-32

God is helpless to change the consequences of our past behaviors. We reap what we sow. The law of causality is absolute. But due to the concern of God over the suffering of his children, the following verses occur:

This time, I shall make your future known in this life time.

Look at the disorder of the body. 5-2

I shall make everything in the mind of each of you

clearly manifest on your body. 12-171

God is trying to help us sweep evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) from our minds. God places illness and disorders on our bodies in relationship to how much evil we have in our mind. When we ponder over our illness, we can remove evil from our hearts. When this happen, the illness disappears, but it also opens a path of joy in the future (the law of causality).

In summation, the law of causality is absolute. God’s love for his children is also absolute. Because of this love, God has begun to work for the salvation of all mankind. Ponder over any illness or disorder of your bodies. They may be God’s guidance to help ensure a joyous future with everyone helping each other.

Causality/Karma/Innen

Why is understanding causality so important?  Causality is a self-regulating process to purify the minds of mankind.  To change our attitude, or our way of thinking is difficult. How easy is it for an alcoholic to stop drinking? How easy is it to control our temper? Many times we understand our fallacies and promise to change; but when difficult situations arise, we succumb to our old ways. Just promising to change is not enough.

How do we become good people? We must understand causality. Good thoughts and behavior brings forth joy, and evil (greed, arrogance, and self love) brings forth inconveniences. Besides understanding causality, we must accept and ponder over the daily appearances of causality. When life brings upon difficulties, one must accept these inconveniences without malice, or resignation. It is only when we do this, can we bring forth a joyous future. The process of causality allows us to eventually eliminate our debts (bad effects of causality), and plant seeds that will blossom into joy (good effects of causality) only. This process purifies our mind. It eliminates greed, arrogance, and self love from our minds.

Whether one believes in God or not, the law of causality favors no religion, race, or country. Like the law of gravity, it applies to everyone. God has given us a process to purify our minds!
