We Do Not Understand

In the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki), God tells us that we do not understand. This sacred book gives us the ingredients to live a joyous life. Yet in the last chapter, God continues to tell us that we do not understand. Why is it so difficult to understand God’s teachings? In the Book of Prophecy, God tells us we must first remove greed, arrogance, self-love, miserliness, and covetousness from our minds. When the mind is purified of these evils, we are able to understand what events or information is presented to us.

In our religion, and in many other religions, the individual who tries to understand their sacred books have preconceived ideas that may prevent them from understanding the contents. We have the dust of arrogance in our minds. We often think we are right, and others are wrong. God tells us to remove these thoughts before reading the Book of Prophecy. As we will find out, it takes a herculean effort to eliminate these evils from our minds. It takes time and commitment to eliminate these evils. God tells us that when our minds are purified of these evils, we will be more receptive to God’s teachings; and our minds will become spirited and full of hope. The purpose of life may be hidden in our sacred books; but the key to the discovery may be our purified minds.

If you have anger, you do not know God’s teachings

In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), we are told that if we have anger, we do not know God’s teachings. But how do we remove greed, arrogance, and self-love from our minds? Anger, I believe comes from our arrogance. We believe that we are correct, and others are not. In my life, anger appears to arise at work, at home, and especially when I am driving. How often do you get to urge to stare a driver down when you pass him or her when you think they are not driving correctly; or how often have you seen an inappropriate finger directed to you. This is anger that is derived from arrogance.

In our religion, we are told to sweep the dust of arrogance from our thoughts. But this endeavor is a difficult task as I have found out. It is easy path to follow when the days go by without difficulties or inconveniences; but when inconveniences appear, thoughts of anger easily emerge. How do we then prevent anger from emerging? How do we remove arrogance from our minds?

We must admit that we have arrogance in our minds. When this mindset of arrogance manifests anger, we must be careful not to take any negative actions, or show our anger. We must ponder, and acknowledge that we as human beings are not always perfect. We must realize that people make mistakes, and sometimes their actions may not appear right to us. If we do not react negatively, then I believe that arrogance will gradually disappear from our minds. It is like any neural pathway. If we continue the pathway to anger by showing it or responding negatively, arrogance in our minds will continue to increase; but if we block the pathway of anger by pondering and settling the mind, then arrogance will decrease. In the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki), God tells us that this is a difficult path to follow; but God also tells us to lean on him, and he will help you to remove arrogance, greed and self love from your minds.

Tenrikyo /The Mind and Body Continued

In the Book of Prophecy (Fudesaki) is the following verse:

Ponder over this talk, all of you in the world.

There is no mind the same as another. 5-7

Even between parent and child, husband and wife, and siblings,

their minds all differ from one another. 5-8

God is talking about the amount of greed, arrogance and self-love in our minds. But what determines how much of these undesirables we have in our minds? Some scientist would say that hormones or chemicals in our brains are the ingredients that make us greedy, arrogant and selfish. When we act upon these undesirables, the body produces more of these chemicals or hormones; but if we resist these urges caused by these hormones, we reduce the production of these chemicals. For example, if we submit to our greedy desires, our bodies produce more of the chemicals, which make us greedier.

The question arises on how we remove these undesirables or evils from our minds. First we must admit that we have these undesirables like greed, arrogance and self-love in our minds. We must admit to our sins. We must then have strength to resist these urges by leaning on God. With resistance, these urges become less, and our minds become more pure of these undesirable chemicals.

But what happens when the mind is overflowing with greed, arrogance and self-love? What is the effect on our bodies and our future? Hormones are chemicals, and these chemicals can be converted to electrical energy in our minds. Let us postulate that these undesirable hormones are converted to negative energy. These negative energies eventually disseminate to other parts of our bodies and may cause illness or cancers. Many in the scientific community accept this concept of the mind affecting the body. But is there another organ or entity that collects these negative energies? In the next blog, I will discuss the “soul” as a collector or filter of these negative charges.

Let us now change directions, and talk about the controversial subject of the soul. Hopefully we can come back to the previous subject of the mind, and relate it to the soul. The soul or the innermost heart is said to be a positive energy source from God; some will say it is a part of God, originating from the pure mind of God. In the Book of Prophecy is the following verse:

To God, each of you, one and all, is a child of mine.

I am filled with love for you. 8-61

But the innermost heart of everyone of you

Has accumulated piles of dust (evils). 8-62

Science postulates that negative charges are attracted to positive charges. The soul, which is all positive energy, attracts the negatives charges created in the mind. The innermost heart or the soul of most people is surrounded by these negative charges. The soul is like a filter that attempts to collect all of our negative energies of the mind. But what happens to these negative energies that surround the soul? What is the fate of the soul and negative energies upon death of the individual?

Many people believe that the body will decay, but believe that the soul will continue. But where will the soul go? Edgar Cayce, the clairvoyant believed that we have all lived in many mansions. In many religions, reincarnation is believed to be true. Even early Christians are said to have believed in reincarnation.

If reincarnation exists, we take our pure soul and surrounding negative charges to our next incarnation. These charges carry our distinct urges, temperament, and selfish traits. These charges are transmitted from the soul to the developing mind, and are converted to chemicals or hormones that eventually negatively influence the developing child. We carry our sins to our next incarnation. This is why our minds all differ.

Besides causing illness, what can these negative energies that surround the soul cause? Karma says that these negative energies can also be released out of the body, and come back to us as suffering or inconveniences. We may have to reconsider what causes natural disasters. It may not be global warming, but it may be the increase in the release of negative energy from our souls?

How do we eliminate  these negative energies that surround our pure heart. First we must admit that we have greed, arrogance, and self-love in our minds. We must admit that we have sinned. We must resist these evil urges when they develop in our minds, and not carry them out. When we continue to resist these temptations, the pathway of these evils will be broken, resulting in less negative charges surrounding our souls. Eventually with determination and hard work, our soul will be free of these negative charges, and our minds will become spirited.

Tenrikyo /Pay to Play

One Presidential candidate is accused of pay for play or quid pro quo. For the layman, it is “You scratch by back, and I will scratch yours”. But it is difficult to prove wrongdoing unless the play or quo occurs immediately after the pay or quid. These corrupt politicians know this, and often delay the favors to their contributors. Often the delay in favor or play is what keeps these people out of trouble. The general public sees the improprieties; but the law cannot prosecute these individuals because there are no immediate direct relationships. This is why it appears that evil people get away from prosecution and punishment; but do they?

Ironically, the law of cause and effect work similar to how the game of pay to play or quid pro quo is played by our politicians. The effects of the cause may be prolonged, sometimes taking effect years later or in another lifetime (reincarnation). We see, but we do not understand. We see what is happening to us now, but we do not understand why they are occurring. An example of bad karma is the Kennedy family. What family has suffered the most tragedies? It is well known that the family wealth came from illegal liquor distributions. Their family history reveals sexual improprieties, and possible association with mobsters. Because of the lapse of extended time, most people cannot see why sufferings or inconveniences occur. Again, we see, but we do not understand.

As for the race for the White House, the more evil candidate may win; but like a scorecard, their hearts record each good or bad deed; and these merits or debits in their hearts will sprout its effect in the future. These evil politicians use time in their favor to obtain wealth and power, but when suffering or inconvenience fall upon them or their families, they may not understand that time also is a factor. We see, but we cannot or refuse to understand. Victory may be great now, but their future may be a path of suffering.

Tenrikyo /Can Illness Be Good for Us?

In the Heaven’s Truth Church (Tenrikyo), God is said to guide us by placing illness on ourselves. We ponder over the illness, and we reflect on how we have been using our minds. We attempt to determine if we have had greed, arrogance or self-love in our thoughts and action. We then determine to remove these evils from our minds.

But some will say that it is ridiculous and preposterous that God punishes us for our thoughts and actions. But when are we the most free of arrogance, greed, and self-love? It is when we are ill. Money and power become less important; only our health becomes paramount. It is during these times that our minds become open to understanding God’s truths. It is during this limited window of opportunity that God gives us an opportunity to purify our minds. This transient illness serves as a conduit to attaining everlasting joyous life.

With the purification of our minds, our bodies begin the healing phase; but what happens if we ignore God’s repeated guidance of illness? Some will say that God will continue to make us suffer? But if God were surely attempting to guide us, he would withdraw his guidance until our minds are ready to accept his guidance. It would be unfair for God to repeatedly place illness on our bodies if we cannot understand what is happening.

Some say illness and suffering may be random. Some say illness and inconvenience may be a result of causality from a previous life (karma, innen). Others say that these illnesses are God’s tests to enter the after life. Everyone does not want illness; but if illness serves as guidance from a loving God, then should we not ponder over our illnesses and reflect on our thoughts and actions? Can illness be beneficial for our long-term happiness?

Tenrikyo /The Truth Will Set You Free

With the approaching election, we have two candidates that the general population does not like; but we also have supporters of these candidates that will ignore or not listen to any apparent wrong doings of their candidates. In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), is the following:

Though I have gathered many and various followers,

those that are like a distorted mirror will not do. 3-50

A distorted mirror does not reflect the true image of the subject. It is like the mind that cannot reason when information is placed before oneself. It is a mind tainted by previous false information. It is also a selfish and arrogant mind that ignores true information to benefit oneself, political party, or family. This type of mind will lead to a life entangled in corruption, lies, and sufferings. How does one escape this cycle of suffering?

How do we become like a mirror that reflects the true image? In the Book of Prophecy, God tells us to remove greed, arrogance and self-love from your minds. When our minds become pure, we are able to see the truth. This is important because the “truth will set you free”.

Tenrikyo /The Truth Will Set You Free

What if God gave us the truth? Would this make our lives better? Some believe that they have the truths in their religions; but it is not making their lives better. Of course, what is the definition of better? In reality, the truth like everything that is good in life, is free. Man cannot get a profit from what is free. Some say that you get what you pay for; so they say anything free is not worth much including the words in our sacred books. The truths in the sacred books are free for anyone to peruse, or study intently. But these truths serve no purpose, unless they are utilized and spread. For example, if someone gives you a car; it serves no purpose to keep it in the garage; one has to use it to travel from one point to another. We must use the truths in the sacred books by applying them to events in our lives.

In the Book of Prophecy (Ofudesaki), it is said that the path of salvation and happiness is a difficult path. One’s intent to follow it may not be enough to get one through. Short translation is that one may have the truth, but may not utilize it. But what is this truth that we may have, but fail to utilize or follow? What is this truth that God shows us daily? I believe this truth is about causality, karma, or innen. God is showing us what we have done before. You can also say that God is giving us guidance. That headache or palpation of the heart may be God’s guidance to remove greed, arrogance, and self-love from your thoughts and actions. The truths that appear daily, we must not brush aside; we must ponder and act positively to these inconveniences. For example, sometimes it is difficult and almost impossible to bear when someone we once loved turns away from us. It is difficult not to react negatively. But if we can react positively under these stressful and sad conditions, it creates a positive future. The truth will set you free.

Tenrikyo /Where Do We Direct Our Prayers?

Everyone would agree that God is everywhere. Some would even say that the world is God’s body, which of course includes us. If this is true, we are part of God? But where do we direct our prayers? What are the conduits to God? Many religions have a holy place where people direct their prayers. Some pray to a symbol, like the crucifix in the Christian churches. In the oriental religions, the shrines are where the prayers are directed. But does God reside in these shrines, symbols or holy sites to answer our prayers?

In the heaven’s truth religion, the genesis of human beings began in the oceans, where God selected the first parents of mankind from the creatures of the sea. In them he put the traits of other creatures in the ocean. And from the heavens, the pure mind of God was placed in the first parents. God then brought these two original parents together and began the creation of human beings. The site of this genesis is where God tells us to direct our prayer.

God tells us, that if we are sincere, with our minds pure as the first parents, any prayer will be answered. The pure mind without greed, arrogance, and self-love is a difficult mind to attain; especially it is difficult to attain in this modern world. This is why God does not accept most of our prayers; because it does not match with the original pure mind of the original parents of mankind.

Most people believe that God is everywhere, and any sincere prayer would be effective. But if you want to increase your chances, you may try to pray toward the original mind’s pillar (Kanrodai), where mankind was created. The coordinates are 34 latitude, 135 longitudes. Give it a try; what do you have to lose.

Tenrikyo /God Has Blessed Our Country

Why is America so great? To understand why, we need to understand our constitution. In the Declaration of Independence is the following

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (both sexes) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.-

I believed that God has blessed this country because we hold these beliefs to be true. But there are those in this country that want to help others in countries that hate America. The inhabitants in these countries do not believe in the equality of all human beings. They discriminate on sex, where females are not equal to men, and have limited rights. They discriminate on religion, where other religious doctrines are banned; and the punishment is sometimes death. They restrict travel, and the pursuit of livelihood because of their sex, race, political and religious differences.

I believe that we need to elect leaders that pledge to affirm and support the Declaration of Independence. We need to make American great again by pursuing these truth that are endowed by our Creator. Recently, some political leaders have begun to ignore these self-evident truths. They appear to appease other countries by apologizing for America’s past actions, and have begun to accept millions of refugees that do not believe in the Declaration of Independence. They give millions of dollars to countries that hate America, while our inner cities are falling apart.

We need to make America great again by helping America first. Let us become a beacon to other countries by example. We cannot force other countries that hate and despise us to change their system of government. God has blessed America with prosperity because we have followed these tenets of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. We must not capitulate to those who encourage us to compromise these tenets that God has endowed us with. Vote for the party, or individual that supports our Declaration of Independence!  God has blessed us!
